have eaten 9,713,550 grasshoppers. That is a lot of grasshoppers, and if this figure were mutiplied by 15 or 20, representing the duration of the hopper invasion, it would be a lot more grasshoppers. “It is about time we took a sane view of the balance of nature. She will wreak a worse vengeance, when upset, than any of her forms do by themselves.”
Denies Crow Contests Encourage ’Hoppers
Virgil Simmons, Conservation Department Commissioner, today denied that the state-wide “crow contests” have allowed grasshoppers to become a crop menace. While admitting that crows eat grasshoppers, he said they preferred a diet of game bird eggs.

Raymond Driscoll, 41, known until Sunday as “one of the few major bank robbers still at large,” and captured without resistance by G-Men near Gary, is to be returned to face two bank robbery indictments in the East after a hearing before a U. By United Press NEW YORK, July 20.—A Catholic missionary was credited today by Armstrong Perry of Westport, Conn,, with saving the lives of seven persons when an airplane crashed in the jungles on April 23 while fiying between Santo Eleana and Maracay, Venezuela, Mr. Perry was among the survivors.
