» ANSWER—Very few mothers give ir real reason for not wanting a son to get married. That is because the real reason is too selfish to bear serutinv. Like many others before her this mother simply doesn’t want to lose her son to another woman. But every time the truth popped into her mind she pushed it back as a thought not worthy of her, and she was right about it. It isn't worthy of her. The trouble with most of our base thoughts and selfish desires is that they do not die when we push them back into the scrapheap of the mind, but just cast about for a clever disguise in which they can reappear in consciousness without being recognized. A favorite change of form is accomplished by transforming a selfish motive into an apparently unselfish one, but it is just the old story of the wolf in sheep's clothing. Unknown to herself this mother must have cast about for a reason why it weuld not promote her son's welfare to marry the girl of his choice. She hit upon the only thing she could think of to break up the match and it fools no one but herself. The fact that she didn’t think of it earlier before things began to get serious and the attachment harder to break js another link in the chain of

evidence against her.

Cotton Clothing Held Answer to

Summer Worry

Cottons are the perfect solution to the summer wardrobe problem. Beautiful, practical, and cool, they fill the clothes bill for everyone in the family from the baby to the hard-working head of the house-

hold. Both underwear and outerwear are so inexpensive that they can be bought in quantities and changed as soon as they become the least pit wilted. In fact, crisp, fresh cot-

the chief ingredients in a warmweather pick-up that can't be improved on. Laundering is no problem as far as cotton garments are concerned. If the fabric is white, the garments can be washed, scrubbed, and even

boiled over and over again, a considerable advantage in the upkeep of such things as children’s rompers, perspiration-soaked underwear, and men's shirts. For the most part, however, the only maintenance they need in return for long, satisfactory service is ordinary washing with soap and water. If soap is added as often as necessary to keep up a continuous frothy lather, they will emerge snowy-white from the tub or washing machine. Colored and printed cottons should, of course, be washed separately in tepid water for both washing and rinsing, and quantities

of sizzling suds. Soaking should he

avoided. Like all colored and printed fabrics, it is best to handle colored cottons as quickly as possible and to dry them in the shade.

Trend to Femininity Ettects

By MARIAN YOUNG

NEA Service Staff Correspondent

| NEW YORK, July 16—House- | coats, in gay linen and cotton | prints, will be the smartest gar- | ments to wear on the beach, in the

| garden, around your town apartment or country house this summer. The trend toward a softer mode, with feminine clothes outshining strictly tailored, masculine ones, has made housecoats the most important leisure hours fashions. Fashionables are going to sit in their beach cabanas in gay printed {linen and cotton housecoats as well | as shorts and shirts and beach pa- { jamas outfits. They'll wear silk | ones, swirling about the ankles, for | luncheon at home and lazy afternoons in the garden, tea on the ve- | randa. | and glamor, and a housecoat is the personification of both.

Slim Bodice Flatters

The neatest and most flattering | numbers are slim bodiced, full | skirted, with slide fasteners or neat | rows of buttons down the front. In | the 1937 manner, they have smallish revers, shoulder lines widened enough to make for a nice, square, but not grotesque, look. Many are ankle-length. A few are even shorter than that. Perfect for the beach are threepiece play suits which include a beach wrap cut on housecoat lines, shorts and shirt. One of the nicest consists of white shorts and shirt in wide wale pique and an utterly charming, ankle-length coat of the same material in a print—red and white poinsettas, spaced far apart on a navy background. Another includes a printed cotton swim suit and a housecoat beach robe in twin | print. The suit has navy polka dots on white. The robe is navy with white dots. | Terry cloth robes, which are as | easy to wash as bath towels and do | not have to be ironed at all, come | in brilliant colors, all pastels and | white. Vegetables and

[Lamb Shoulder Are Tasty Dish

By MRS. GAYNOR MADDOX NEA Staff Writer From the garden to the table is a rule for first-class eating. Fresh vegetables steamed or boiled in very little water, drained at once, and served with butter and seasoning make elaborate hits with any intelligent appetite. But there are equally good ways of combining them with other vegetables or with meat during the season of garden freshness. Vegetable and Lamb Casserole (4 to 6 servings) Two pounds shoulder of lamb, 1% teaspoons salt, 1': cups boiling a 1 pound tiny new potatoes, > Cups youn as (2 i wl g pe (2 pounds in Trim thin slices of fat from lamb. Place them in bttom of a 112 quart heat resistant glass saucepan. Melt fat over heat, and then brown the lamb slightly on all sides. Sprinkle browned meat with salt. Add boiling water. Cover tightly and simmer over very low heat for 45 minutes. Then add scraped new potatoes and top with fresh peas. Cover and continue cooking 20 minutes longer, or until meat and vegetables are tender. This makes a satisfactory and low-cost one-dish meal. Serve it at table from the same glass dish it was cooked in.

Fresh Vegetable Casserole

One cup cooked peas, 1 cup cooked corn, 1 cup cooked lima beans, 1 cup frenched cooked carrots (all vegeta-~ bles are freshly cooked), 1 cup vegetable stock, 2 cups milk, 3 tablespoons butter, 3 tablespoons flour, salt, pepper, ': cup cracker crumbs. Heat butter in saucepan, then slowly add flour and blend. Slowly stir in vegetable stock, then milk and continue to stir until sauce begins to thicken. Season. Butter casserole dish. Place a layer of cream sauce over bottom, then a layer of peas, a layer of sauce, then a layer of corn, a layer of sauce, then a layer of lima beans and last a layer of sauce. Sprinkle top with cracker crumbs. Bake in moderately hot oven (375 degrees F.) for 35 minutes. Do not overseason this dish. The flavor of the fresh vegetable will do the seasoning for vou.

M'KENNEY American Bridge League Secretary HEN South picked up his good-looking hand, holding that much-desired “strength in both majors,” he had visions of at least a game for his own side, and certainly no fears of a successful slam bid by his opponents. However, the combination of voids in side suits and great trump strength can make aces and kings no more valuable than deuces and treys, as more than one South player learned in today's hand, which was played recently at the Sheridan Bridge Club of New York. It was in a duplicate game held in preparation for the forthcoming national championship tournament of the American Bridge League at Asbury Park, N. J, the week of Aug. 2. Two young players, Jack Miller and Ben Dyass, both keen in play and optimistic in bidding, reached a grand slam despite the opening bid. Miller was East and Dyass West. As they played, the overcall in opponent’s suit was forcing to game, and the moment the fit of the hands in diamonds was confirmed, Miller felt justly proud of his holding and, even though he held not a single ace, contracted for a grand slam. He reasoned that West held a good heart suit, and certainly had to hold the ace of diamonds and the ace of clubs to justify his strong overcall and later jump to six. With such great trump strength and apparent control of all four suits as shown in the bidding, there should be at least a play for a grand slam. I am inclined to think that Fast and West should have been satisfied with a small slam against

an opening vulnerable bid, but no | one can quarrel { Miller had no difficulty in making | seven.

Corner Shelves Provide Space

“What, no soap!” It isn’t always carelessness but lack of space that makes it hard to keep the bathroom well-equipped. Most old-fashioned bathrooms have plenty of room for neat stacks of soap, wash cloths, towels and other supplies, but it requires some in- | genuity to find storage space in the compact bathroom of the average modern home. Triangular shelves, either readymade or the home-constructed variety, are a good solution to the space problem because they can be fitted into otherwise useless corners. Paint them white or color them to go with other bathroom furnishings and you have a surface as easy to keep clean as tile,

Simple Design Note Of Country Clothes

This season country clothes strengthen their hardy character by keeping to simple lines and in their design use details borrowed from boys’ and men's fashions. You see the shirt collar, the little boys’ sailor collar, patch pockets, draw-string blouses, slacks and shorts—designs that use seams and man-tailoring to

achieve fashion importance.

Child’s Mind Is Sensitive About Looks

Growing Youngsters Can Be Deeply Wounded by Any Ridicule.

By OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON

A growing child is sensitive about his looks. The pecuiiar part is that he often hates the very features that others praise.

Mary tugs at her mop oi golden curls and declares that they're hideous. Why? Well, perhaps she associates such glory with her second cousin Anne, whom she doesn’t like, and who happens to be topped with a similar thatch. Or it might be that Myrtle, her best friend, has straight, shiny hair, as black as shoe polish. .

But alas, it's more than likely that Brother Bill has christened her “Goldilocks” or even tweaked the soft ringlets and called her “Gun Moll.”

You seldom can tell why a child learns to dislike his, or her, features. Never to Be Spoken

There are times, of course, when causes are more obvious, such as teasing about ears that stick out, a nose that turns to the sky; or referring to lean little legs as “pipe-stems.” Even the slightest allusion to any regular member is unwise, because the ever-ready disparagement of the child seizes upon any excuse to fix itself. We should not joke about anything of the sort, however lovingly, or by sign or sigh reveal our secret disappointment. The boy or girl must always feel that he is as good looking as everyone else. And, of course, he really is. Beauty is so thin and so fleeting. The least attractive child usually grows into a personable, if not handsome, adult. . So why should he carry a secret hurt with him all his life? There is something about freckles that sears the soul of their young victims, yet the freckled child is usually a sweetheart. And those little dots are not disfiguring but as lovely as dew.

Ugly Ducklings Will Be Swans

Here is the crux of the whole matter, I think. Time cures almost everything but feelings. It shapes up heads, ears and noses, fills out shanks and wipes off the skin. It evens off the fast-grower and the little fellow who delays adding to his inches. As they say, it all comes out in the wash. In the meantime,

we must do all we can not to allow

self-consciousness to ruin things. There is so much that can be controlled or avoided during the sensitive stage. Not all, but every little bit helps. Children get

notions enough

| without our aid. However, it is sur- | prising how little the boy [the kids calling him | “Freck.” [be his membership card, and tingles | with

resents “Carrot” or Indeed, he knows this to pride over “Pie Face” “Fatty.” One last rule and a good one is, “Never discuss a child's looks with him or before him.” The best way

or

| is to forget all about it, unless there

is something that needs professional help, such as teeth or persistent eruptions. Cleanliness is all a child needs. Children are all lovely. (Copvright, 1937, NEA Service, Inc.)

Girls May Display Hearts Upon Heels

It won't be long before girls will be wearing their hearts on their heels, if the brain child of a Mexican inventor achieves recognition. His contribution to feminine elegance is a transparent heel containing symbols designed to express the mood of the moment, or figures appropriate to specific occasions and events. Among the novelties incorporated in his various heel designs are flowers, animals, mermaids, portraits of movie stars, and gold fish swimming about in a liquid filling. Luminous effects on some of the figures provide miniature beacons, making it easy to locate the wearers in the dark.

First Lady's Dancing Friend Gives Tips on Care of Figure

By ALICIA HART NEA Staff Writer If Robert Jonay continues the spectacular climb to stardom that first made her a White House guest, then put her name among New York's bright lights as a dancer, she can give personal charm a big chunk of

the credit.

Whatever the future may hold for the First Lady's little

protege, isn’t likely to dim her friendly personality and the magnetism

of her beauty.

Miss Jonay's winning smile and her desire to put others at ease are attributes to the charm which undoubtedly captivated Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and has started the petite, dark-eyed girl well along on a

dancing career. Slender and graceful, with glistening, sparkling eyes which radiate warmth and interest in what others have to say, she has none of the brittleness or affectations so often found in theatrical agents’ offices. Not boldly or brazenly, but quite simply and with a charming lack of self-consciousness, she answered the question about figure exercises by taking off her shoes in her agent's office and doing a couple of routines.

“Now the deep knee bend is a fine exercise,” the attractive Southern girl said. “But you ought to tell your readers that it won't do them a bit of good unless they pull their stomachs in and lift their chests when doing it. “You balance yourself on your toes,” Miss Jonay continued, “then, keeping head up and back straight, bend knees and go down to a squatting position, meanwhile contracting stomach muscles. Hold that position a second or two. Relax as you come back to the standing position.

Describes Exercise

“To develop the chest and keep arms from getting muscular, Martha Graham (I study with her, you know) has us stretch arms forward, palms up, then clench fists and turn arms outward, contracting and expanding chest as well as arm muscles. We do this one before every dance lesson.” Miss Jonay, saying that she didn't want to talk about what she did and what the Roosevelts said while she was their house guest, was quite

Diagnosis Is Vital in Ills Of Kidneys

Varied Forms of Inflammation Very Easily Confused, Doctor Says.

By DR. MORRIS FISHBEIN

Editor American Medical Journal

If the cause of iraammation of the kidneys could he definitely de= termined in every case, it would be easy to list the different forms and the associated diagnoses. Everything depends, of course, on whether the inflammation of the kidney is classified according to what is seen of the kidney at operation or after the patient dies, or whether the condition is classi fied wholly according to the sympe toms. There is one form of inflamma= tion of the kidney which comes on suddenly in young people. Its cause is unknown but it is believed to be due to a severe infection. In these cases the person becomes severely sick; his urine is cloudy, dark and scanty. Sometimes there is visible blood in the urine. Usually if the infection is removed or if the patient recovers from an infectious disease that is coincie dental, the kidney also begins to clear up. This is an acute form of Bright's disease.

Bright's Disease The most serious of all forms of

inflammation of the kidney is the | chronic form of Bright's disease. It | seldom occurs before the age of 40, It comes on very gradually. Sometimes it follows acute Bright's disease, In most of these cases, the pase tient has already begun to have some hardening of the arteries and a rise in blood pressure. The Kkidneys become inflamed and the tise sue is destroyed so that the urine is thin and watery. It also contains albumin, Gradually waste products, which ought to be eliminated by the kidney, accumulate in the blood. These affect the entire body. There may be enlargement of the heart or the patient may die from a chronic poisoning of the body with the results of these urinary products, : this condition being called uremia. Sometimes when a rise in the blood pressure is hereditary or sometimes when it comes on withe out any appreciable cause, the blood pressure disturbance may go on for some time before there are symptoms that the kidney is affected. In these cases the kidneys may also Show signs of a chronic inflammaion.

Peril to Blood Vessels

When the blood vessels throughe out the body are hardened, nate urally those in the kidney may also be affected. Usually it is the large blood vessels of the kidney, rather than the small ones, that are cone cerned. Every tissue in the body may be affected with the difficulties in the circulation of the blood under such circumstances. In this form of kidney disease also, the treatment is directed to the body as a whole rather than to the kidney. This form of inflammation of the kidney is frequently called the nephritis of old age. A fourth form of nephritis is that caused by bacteria which get into the kidneys by way of the blood or which develop in association with the formation of stones or which get into the kidney by extension from below. This form of inflammation is known as pyelonephritis because there is a combination of all of the symptoms of infections with those particularly concerning the kidney.
