Asta Saved In Dog Drive
11-Year-Old Boy Rescues Star From Pound.
Times Special HOLLYWOOD, July 15.—Boldly defying the law, a quick-thinking 11-year-old boy this week saved
Asta, wirehair pet of William Powell and Myrna Loy in the “Thin Man” pictures, from being picked up during the present rabies scare. Numerous people have been bitten by dogs during recent weeks, and as a result police and pound authorities of Hollywood and Los Angeles are enforcnig an ordinance that requires all animals to be kept on leash. However, Asta, whose real name is Skippy, was allowed to run loose in front of his West Hollywood home the other morning. Henry East, his owner, wanted the dog to play awhile before going to the studios where he would spend the day before the cameras with Irene Dunne and Cary Grant in “The Awful Truth.” Asta wandered down the block, and was frisking joyfully when a dog catcher’s truck drove up. Attendants noticed the animal. They got out and started to encircle him. But Charles Ehrmann Jr., who had been watching through the window, and who often plays with Asta, ran out and got him first. He gathered him up and ran inside. Mr. East, looking for his canine star, arrived a moment later and, after placating the men, rewarded the youth.
