STATE ACTION IN CLARK COUNTY'S GAMING SOUGHT

Townsend Promises to Talk With Attorney General On Program.

Governor Townsend today took under advisement the case of Clark County civic and business leaders against “gamblers and imported gangsters” in Jeffersonville. He told a Citizens’ Committee which conferred with him that he would consult with Attorney General Omer Stokes Jackson before leaving for Washington. “Maybe we can work out some kind of a program,” he said. “I hesitate to assume jurisdiction over ancther governmental unit, but I weuld do so under certain conditions.”

Report Due Thursday

He said he will report to the Committee Thursday on what action, if any, the State will take in the matter. The committee made no charges of graft or corruption against local law enforcement officials, the Governor reported. “Gambling seems to be more of an outdoor sport as far as officials are concerned.” he quoted the committee members as saying. The Rev. R. C. Dillman, delegation member, earlier had said the group planned to “make no specific demands, but would tell the Governor all angles of the situation which has culminated with the death of Clarence Amster, New Albany businessman, and the wounding of Mrs. | Walter Maddox, Jeffersonville tavern proprietor’s wife. Police Collapse Charged

The Rev. Mr. Dillman, who charged local law enforcement has collapsed, said the committee was not prepared to ask the removal of authorities, “not at this time, at any rate.” He said it was decided at a mass meeting in Jeffersonville last Thursday to send the delegation to Gov-

INDIANA SHIPPERS | JOIN RATES FIGHT

Indiana shippers today prepared to aid shippers in other North Central states in fighting proposed | freight rate reductions to Southern | shippers, now before the Interstate Commerce Commission. H. A. Hollopeter, Indiana State Chamber of Commerce traffic director, said proposed rate reductions to Southern shipping inter- | ests would be inequitable and discriminatory to Northern shippers. | He has called a meeting of freight traffic directors from the North Central states, to be held in| Chicago Thursday. “The Southern interests are thoroughly organized and are making a determined effort to force Southern railroads to give what Northern shippers believe will be a decided rate advantage over Northern interests in transporting their products into this territory,” Mr. Hollopeter added.
