Approval of Sea Film Is Unanimous

Scripps - Howard Critics Laud Performance of Spencer Tracy.

By JAMES THRASHER With almost unprecedented

enthusiasm, Secripps-Howard motion picture reviewers have proclaimed “Captains Cour-

ageous” the Picture Hit of the Month for June. “Captains Courageous” anchored

up at Loew's for a fortnight preceding the current Marx Brothers pic-

ture, and there was scarcely a dis- | Senting voice among the local cheers. Now Kipper Lionel Barrymore brings his smart little fishing smack, the Were Here.” into sight again, | up to the gun’les with a cargo of superlative adjectives The M-G-M translation of Rip.

ling's sea saga won hands do wr everv Scripps-Howard city ere it was shown. Where it was not released, critics picked up the picture from previews, The New York World-Telegram, in fact, gave it| two votes. The picture was shown | in New York during May. and Wil- | liam Boehnel chose it, though it wasn't on the May list. Last month Jack Foster Jr. pinch-hitting for the vacationing Mr. Bochnel, also gave it his vote, “Among Finest of Year” As neat a summing up as any was turned in by Jack Bryan of the

Memphis Press-Scimitar, who said: ‘ ‘Captains Courageous our June's best picture. Few pictures can such universal appeal in theme and thrill as ‘Captains Courageous’ achieved. Eloquent its sea setting, it was equally eloouent in the human drama projected by the surpassing performance of Spencer Tracy and the fine work of Freddie Bartholomew. It was a picture stamped with the grandeur of simple truth, an unrivaled screen work for the month and among the finest of the year.” Either Kasper

mM

Monahan, the Pittsburgh Press reviewer, was making a play on words or else the stenographer erred in transcribing, for his estimate contains the statement that the picture's emotional impact has all the smashing force of | the gale that forms the “climatic” episode of the story. Whatever the intent, Mr. Monahan's observation is to the point,

“Direction Excellent”

Other “raves” include that of the Albuquerque Tribune's Irene Fisher, who wrote: “Men against the sea 1S an eternally stirring theme, and storv of ‘Captains Courageous’ is one | io quicken the breath and the heart direction

of the beholder. The is excellent, and the superb acting oi Spencer Tracy adds to the strength of the film All of the comments stressed the direction, story ‘adaptation, photography and particularly Mr. Tracys performance. To me, the most significant aspect of Mr. Tracy's Manuel was the triumph over intrinsically insignificant material.

Could Have Been ‘Hokum’

The Portuguese fisherman's role is one that would have lent itself easily to “hokum.” The sentimental. devout, emotional vet rugged seaman surely would have been overplaved in less skillful hands. Yet Mr. Tracy is an actor who can move vou without obvious attempt, and take you to the verge of tears without being despised for it So, having added the acclaim of professional movie spectators to the credit of “Captins Courageous,” we may leave it until the season arrives for picking the year’s 10 best pictures, when it surely will be heard from again

TRACY PREFERS POLO
