manding from manufacturers, and also in co-operating with the United States Bureau of Standards (in its efforts to improve standards among manufacturers) to the end that all manufactured goods be branded as to grades and qualities. Many of such agreements have been effected. Others are in the process of development. ITH the inauguration of Wasson’s basement store, the same policy was adopted, and is being rigidly adhered to. From time to time, however, we have had to send back to manufacturers, many hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise that upon examination was found to be either inferior, defective, or substandard. In a recent basement sale for which thousands of dollars worth of merchandise was purchased specific instructions were given’ to all vendors that the merchandise so purchased must be guaranteed first quality, yet despite careful supervision it has been called to our attention that certain pieces of merchandise received and placed on sale were found to be defective.

For Example:

Women’s hand-turned genuine kid D'Orsays were advertised “Made to sell for $2.00 and $2.50, at 99¢.” Escaping rigid examination in our receiving rooms, some shoes found to have been defective, were included in this lot, a number incidently that regularly sold for less than $2.00, among them. These have been withdrawn from sale.

In the group of men’s hosiery advertised 6/49c, seconds were found after the merchandise had been placed on sale.

In a group of bath mats at $1.00, seconds were found after the merchandise had been placed on sale.

In each instance, the merchandise was withdrawn from sale.

ATURALLY ENOUGH, in a sale of such tremendous magnitude, where many thousands of dollars worth of merchandise is turned over in a day, errors will creep in. We extremely regret it.
