Boondoggle Is Neckpiece of Great Honor, Scouts Explain

Misusing Word.
By FREDERICK C. OTHMAN United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, July 2—Here in a tent by the Potomac today etymological history was made and that ubiquitous word, “boondoggle,” received at last a definition which won't make Harry Hopkins mad. Neither will it make the Republicans happy (come to think of it), but facts are facts and truth is truth and a boondoggle isn’t what you

The State Welfare Board today considered regulations under which the State will pay one-half the county welfare employees’ salaries. Under amendments to the 1937 State Welfare Act effective yester-
day, employees are to be selected |

through merit examinations by the
State Board.
Up to now, the State Board has classified only the principal positions in county departments. Certification of all eligible lists will not be completed until Sept. 1, the Board announced.

Bn United Press NEW ALBANY, July 2.—Cecil Google, 41-year-old Quartermaster’s Depot employee, was held today in connection with the fatal shooting of his wife, Mary, at their home last night. Google was arrested on a country road near here last night by Sheriff Oda Pyle, who brought him to jail for questioning. Sheriff Pyle said when he found the suspect he was
carrying one of his children in his arms.
“I was drunk, and killed my wife.” the Sheriff quoted Google as saying.

Take three strips of leather, pref- | erably colored red, white and blue, | braid them together, wrap the resultant thong around somebody’s neck—and that is a boondoggle, as well as a great honor. If this sounds complicated, blame it on Scoutmaster Robert Link of Rochester, N. Y, who invented the | original boondoggle, who is so proud | of it that he christened his first- | born son “Boondoggle Link,” and | who isn't any too pleased about the Republicans appropriating his idea and making it mean something else, The facts became known at the Boy Scout Jamboree, where delegates from Rochester awarded a de | luxe boondoggle to their congressman, George B. Kelly, for meritorfous services rendered. The elder Link wasn't present. Neither was young Boondoggle Link (he not being old enough to
join the Scouts), but there were on |

Invented in 1929 What they had to say was plenty.
Paul Saferno, a charter boondoggler, |
did most of the explaining. Back in 1929, long years before
thought about
Scoutmaster Link decided it would be nice if his troop had a medal, or emblem, or something, to present to eminent benefactors. He liked the idea of a, colorful leather braid to be looped around the recipient's neck. It had to have a name and “boondoggle” was the Saferno said suddenly into It was an inspiration. Anyhow th eidea caught on, and it people everywhere were getting hoondoggles. Then from Birkhead, England, Scoutmaster Link received a thrill he will not soon forget. There was a scout meeting there and who should visit it, but the Prince of Wales! Well sir, the scouts from Rochester gave the prince one of their best boondoggles, and he promised to keep it ever after. Not long after. Scoutmaster Link's | Wife presnted him with a baby boy. | What better name, thought the proud father, than “Boondoggle?” Mrs. Bink must have agreed because that's the way the smallest Ling is registered in the family Bible. Weary of Explaining
That's about all the Rochester scouts know about boondoggling, except they're pretty sure Boondoggle Link will join the Scouts as soon as he gets tall enough. They're a little angry abou the politicos appropriating their fine word, and | they're weary to distraction of explaining boondogglism. They hope, they said, that every newspaper in the land prints this | dispatch and that every American reads it and remembers—that a Boondoggle is something far more important than, say, leaf-raking.
