PEAK OIL USAGE SEEN BY AUGUST

Standard of Jersey’s Lamp

Foresees Top of 3,300,000 Barrels Daily.

1612

Times Special rn NEW YORK, June 29.—Peak oil consumption, as indicated by runs to stills, again is prophesied for late | H July and early August, with the high for 1937 around 3,300,000 barrels a day. - Before long, however, seasonal variations: in consumption will level off, the Lamp of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey

stated today. Peak runs to stills in late summer and in past years has been due|T to more general motoring during the warm season... The leveling off of consumption will be accomplished, it was held -by the - trade organ, through increasing use of automobiles in winter and growing use of oil as a household fuel. The publication, charting the “consumption curve” of oil since 1931, shows an annual pickup occurring around mid-winter since 1934. For 1937 a curve of estimation slacks off beginning in late July and an up-curve beginning in November. Ultimately, it is believed, the steadier level of runs to stills will permit of wide economies in oil refinery business without sacrifice to adequate supplies for the various consumer trades at all times.

BROKERS OPINION

NEW YORK, June 29.—Brokerage opinion today: HORNBLOWER & WEEKS—AL{tempts to anticipate a sustained turnabout in the prevailing direction of prices, insofar as the time element is concerned, are proving just as hazardous as was the experience earlier in the year when the market situation and surface developments were the reverse of what they are now. REDMOND & CO.—The character of news developments probably will continue to influence day to day fluctuations and should be watched as a guide to short-term policy. LAMBORN, HUTCHINGS & CO. —As the month of July progresses a better indication can probably be had of the outlook for fall business. E. A. PIERCE & CO.—Absence of any definite solution of the labor situation in its broader sense leaves the industrial picture rather confused. SHIELDS & CO.—The best that can be hoped is that the continued satisfactory business news will hold off important liquidation so that no further drastic break will be recorded. W.L. LYONS & Co. —If the tenor of the news from Washington should change, the market could easily reverse itself and it is to that quarter that most speculators are looking these days

AIR EXPRESS VOLUME UP NEW YORK, June 29.—Nationwide Air Express shipments for May increased 35 per cent over May a year ago, the Air Express division of Railway Express Agency reported today. May shipments totaled 49,383.

HEAVY RECEIPTS DROP PORK BIDS IN LOCAL TRADE

Lambs Decline 50 Cents to Dollar as Vealers Steady.

Responding to downward trends in other centers today and yesterday hog prices dropped 10 cents, ac-

cording to the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Top fell,to $12 on choice 210 to 225-pound butchers while sows were 15 to 25 cents lower in a deal bulked at $9.50 to $10.35 with top at $10.50. An unusually active session developed in the weaker trade this morning. Good to choice cashed at $10 to $10.50 with mediums mostly at $8 to $9. There was quite a contrast in the quality of the cattle run of Monday and today. An attractive run of fed steers and yearlings drew excellent support from all sources, with the result of 15 to 25 cents advances on good to choice offerings. Strictly choice 1082-pound steers topped at $14.75, 1167-pound grading choice at $14.50, with several loads from $13@14, and other fed steers and yearlings from $12 to $13. Heifers topped at $12.90 for 663pound averages, mixed steers and heifers weighing 800 pounds at $12.50. Lamb prices locally . received the full brunt of sharply lower prices at other markets, and fell $1 under Monday's opening or 50 cents under the close. Good to choice ewe and wether lambs went irom $10 to $10.50, with mediums mostly $8.50 to $9.50.

WHEAT PRICES JUMP 2 CENTS IN CHICAGO PIT

Corn Prices Advance as Oats Show Small Gain.

By United Press ‘CHICAGO, June 29.—Wheat fue tures held their steady climb on the Chicago Board of Trade today, reflecting the very pessimistic reports on Canadian wheat prospects, should lack of rain continue, ~ At the end of the first hour wheat

was 2% to 33: cents higher, corn was % to 17% cents higher, and oats

were 7s to 113 cents higher.

Liverpool wheat closed with a gain of more than 8 cents per bushel and the extraordinarily strong finish abroad led to further buying of Chicago futures. One bit of pessi= mistic news in the Chicago pit to--day was an estimate by Sanford Evans, Canadian authority, that the crops on 7,000,000 acres have been irrevocably lost. Another was an unofficial estimate placing the Sas-. katchewan crop yield at 90,000,000 bushels or less, the lowest on record, Wheat receipts here were 22 cars. Trade in July corn was nervous in midmorning. Prices moved sharply in a fairly wide range climbing as high as $1.29 for July, a march up-= ward of 2 cents. December con« tinued weak, however, with only a

small fractional gain, Corn receipts were 9 cars.
