MOVIE BASED ON SPANISH CIVIL WAR COMING TO CIRCLE
Real Scenes Of Conflict
Are in Film
'Last Train From Madrid’ Has Gilbert Roland™ In Comeback.
The first film to use the Spanish civil war as a background, and Paramount’s first tcpical film in several years, will come to the Circle Friday when “The Last Train From Madrid” opens a week’s engagement. * Advance reports indicate that the studio, which, like the rest. of Hollywood's picture makers, has its eye on foreign markets, has bent over backward to avoid show ing prejudice toward either side. There are, however, actual scenes of the conflict,
made by a camera crew which
is said to have joined the warring forces in order to get authentic background. In addition, Paramount constructed a miniature battlefield and a slice of Spanish town on which the actors deploy their talents. The studio sets included three acres of trenches, complete with barbed wire and sand bags; an acre of barricaded Spanish streets and a section of railroad, covering two and a half acres, over which “The Last Train- from Madrid” carried its refugees in 10 cars. °
Sand, Wire Cause Trouble
According to the Paramount publicity department, the studio almost had a little war.of its own .when the sand and wire were being brought through the gates. The picture was being shot at a time when the recent film industry disturbance was at its height. Pickets held up the trucks and refused to let them on the lot until Frank Caffey, Paramount business manager, assured them that the materials were to be used in a picture, not as a measure against the -strikers..
The cast inciudes, among others, Dorothy Lamour, who gets top billing in her third picture, and Gilbert Roland, absent from the screen for two years, ‘who is on the comeback trail. The handsome Mr. Roland, whom Norma Talmadge drafted into the movies as her leading man, seems a logical choice for a leading part.
Father Was Bull Fighter
Though born in Mexico, he is of Spanish blood. His father, Francisco Alonso, was a famous Spanish bullfighter in his day, and has made his home in Spain for many years. It is feared that he has been killed, however, since he has been living where the fighting has been thickest, and has been unreported for more than six months. There is something almost “Marxian” in ‘the picture’s cast, since three brothers had a part in its making—and one of them is named Chico. Mr. Roland, whose real name is Luis Antonio Damaso de Alonso, ‘has a brther Julio, who plays a bit part, while his brother Chico acted as assistant director. Other principals in “The Last Train from Madrid” are Lew Ayres, Karen Morley, Lionel Atwill, Anthony Quinn, Helen Mack, Robert Cummings and Olympe Bradna.
Smith ‘Stand-in’
Retired Officer
By United Press HOLLYWOOD, June 28.—BrigGen. Reginal D. Napier-Raikes, retired British Army commander of the brigade in Nigeria, was discovered today working on a movie lot as “stand-in” for the actor, C. Aubrey Smith. The General, who once was governor of a district of 10,000 square miles, met the English actor in London. Gen. Napier-Raikes, irked at retirement idleness, took Mr. Smith’s suggestion and came to Hollywood. He said he enjoys the work of standing before the
cameras during the routine preJiminary adjustments before Mr.
mith is filmed in a scene.

But above all, he must remember © that historical value should never take precedence over entertainment, and that the shape of Napoleon's buttons matters far less than making Napoleon himself a plausible character in the script. This Napoleon, incidentally, has been bobbing up a lot, of late. He has been causing a file-full of problems for men like George Richelevie, who as technical director on both Garbo's “Madame Walewska” and M - G - M’s adaptation of Rudolf Friml’s operetta, “The Firefly,” has two Napoleons on his hands atd once—one in each picture.
Served in Austrian Army
A military man; himself, Richelevie needed more than a Bonaparte to daunt him. A short, squat man with a bullet head, an erect carriage, twinkling blue eyes and an encyclopedic mind, he served as a captain in the Austrian army during the World War. Afterward he drifted to Cuba, became a confident of President Alfredo Zayas, and first became of service to motion pictures when E. H. Griffith took a company to Cuba to film a military story, “White Mice.”
Grateful because Richelevie assisted him in a skirmish with authorities, Griffith promised him a job, should he ever come to New York. The job soon was needed. Zayas was out of office, and Richelevie with him. Griffith kept his word. He took the former captain to Maj. Bowes, then Capitol Theater director and head of M-G-M’'s New York studio, who assigned him to make a German version of “Three Faces East.” But the production was canceled. Richelevie,- who meantime had acquired a knowledge of the new sound technique, was re-engaged for sound effects in the silent “Ben

But his background of knowledge of European court customs and military affairs made him more valuable as a research technician. In 1930, he was made technical director for Raymond Novarro’s “Daybreak,” and a series of outstanding films have followed: “As You Desire Me,” “Grand Hotel,” “Reunion in Vienna,” “A Tale of Two Cities,” “Escape,” “China eas,” “Fury,” “The Merry Widow,” “East of Zanzibar,” “Camille,” “The Great Ziegfeld,” “Maytime,” and now “Madame Walewska” and “The Firefly.” His most difficult assignments, he

Script Marked ‘Caution’ Now a valued member of Nathalie Bucknall’s M-G-M research department, Richelevie points out that the technical director has no real authority. “He cannot, suddenly stop a scene and say ‘That is wrong. If there is something wrong, he must make note of it so far ahead of shooting time that it can be corrected. When the research department first reviews a script, any questionable situations or descrip= tions which may need to be rectified, are marked ‘caution,’ and suggestions are presented for changing them. ’ . “We have almost nothing to do with the stars, except to assist them, in their portrayal of characters of a period of historical nature, so that they can avoid criticism. Our principal work is to make fiction plausible, and to keep it in the period by digging out the foibles and peculiarities of the people of that time. And we must supply props and backgrounds and situations which are telling in a dramatic way. ‘Firefly’ Scene Involved “For example, for a -single sequence in ‘The Firefly,’ the reenactment of the Battle of Vittoria, we must know the positions of the

- that were given, the movements of
the troops and the distances covered. But we do not just inject that mass of data into the picture under the heading of authenticity. “We select from it what we need to make our own particular sequence of events plausible and we adapt only such actual historical incidents as have definite dramatic value in our story. “Just as we in the research department try to work quietly without making a nuisance of ourselves to director and producer, so the authenticity we seek to establish must be just an undertone, an everpresent suggestion which never becomes obvious or deliberate.”

Dietrich Bathing Scene. Censored
By United Press NEW YORK, June 28.—The Will Hays office has banned “still” pictures and advertisements based on the bathtub scene of Marlene Dietrich’s British-made film, “Knight Without Armor,” it was learned today. Representatives
of Alexander
Korda, producer of the picture, said | that the censors had cut the scene
for which Miss Dietrich spent four days in a bathtub filled with opaque suds. However, the agents said, a scene showing the star running across a lawn clothed only in a nightgown was passed without difficulty.
