NEWS OF THE AUTO WORLD

KEEP MIND ON OTHER FELLOW, DRIVER ADVISES

Signal for Every Turn and Never Play ‘Hunches,’ Official Suggests.

-

By J. M. CRAWFORD General Motors Corp. Not long ago, a party of tourists narrowly escaped mishap. when a battered old car coming toward them on the highway suddenly cut across their path into a farm drive. Good brakes on their car, and a wide apron on the road, enabled them to miss it by a hair, and as they backed onto the road again, they remonstrated to its driver, who was just beginning to realize how close to trouble he had been. “Why in the world didn’t you signal that you were going to turn?” one of the party demanded. “Why, mister,” the other driver answered, “I thought everybody <knowed I live here.” .

In my opinion. that motorist is |

mind, at” all times, the. fact that there are others besides himself on the road, and drives in a manner consistent with that realization. The good driver never assumes that others know what he intends to do. He signals every move—not only his stops and turns, but also his intention to pull away from a curb. He is equally careful to give notice, with his horn when about to pass. Observance of proper signal procedure will automatically do away with one of the most dangerous driving hazards—the sudden, unexpected move. And if he hopes to qualify among the really topnotch drivers, he will go one step further, and keep his eyes open for the other fellow’s signals, so that his own starts, stops and turns may be based on information more reliable than a guess or a “hunch” of what others are about to do.

OIL IS REPLAGED

IN MOTOR FUEL

Development Is Held Answer |

To Demands of New Auto Design.

Times Special NEW YORK, June 26.—Although gasoline is refined from oil, the latest trend in the petroleum industry is to put oil back into gasoline, stated John H. Walsh, sales engineering manager, Tide Water Associated Oil Co., this week. “This startling turn-about is the reply of the fuel engineer to the challenge of the automotive engineer whose new creations represent the latest word in design and performance.” Mr. Walsh said. “Research on the road and in the laboratory has proved that the new cars, with their higher speeds, greater heat and smaller parts, need additional lubrication of valves and cylinders over and above that supplied by the crankcase oil. “To meet this need, the industry has developed gasolines into which is blended an oil that is heat-proof and free of carbon. This constantly lubricates top cylinder parts and eases valve action.” The Tide Water Oil Co. products are distributed by the Troy Oil Co. in Indianapolis, under the direction of Mr. E. J. Schuster, president.

Mr. Roy Wilmeth, Roy Wilmeth Co. president and Indiana's largest Ford dealer, has succeeded in bringing to Indianapolis part of the Ford

exhibit which was in the Century

of Progress Ford Building. It has been set up on the company’s Meridian St. lot at 14th St. Both the 60 and 85-horsepower motors are displayed with parts cut

away, giving visitors an opportunity to see the interior mechanical construction of both. A chassis showing the Juproved 1937 Ford brakes is in the exhibit. According to Mr. Wilmeth, the new brakes add 90 per cent additional driving safety. The new Ford all-steel top. which adds thousands of pounds of tensile strength to the car, is displayed.

Durham, I. Lehner and F.

C. . Rhoades.

It is said to protect the body of the car from collapsing in the event of a collision. Construction of safety glass, upholstery and many other accessories add to the interest of thes exhibit. The popularity of the Ford exhibit at Chicago prompted the Ford Motor Co. to send the display to large dealers around the country, Mr. Wilmeth said.

Customer-Relations Is Created.

Setup

Times Special PONTIAC, Mich, June 26.—C. P. Simpson, Pontiac Motors general sales manager, has announced the formation of the customer-relations department under the direction of Benjamin A. Kissam. The new department head has occupied a responsible position ‘in the advertising department since last- fall. As Mr. Simpson says, every progressive manufacturer realizes today that to obtain an ever-increass ing volume of business there must be a high degree of owner satisfaction. Owner acceptance, he points out, is dependent upon many factors, such as design, appearance, performance, dependability, service given by dealers and even dealer crsonality. In such a competitive market and with satisfaction depending upon so many factors, the customers’ viewpoint can change rapidly either nationally or in separate localities. Pontiac feels that customer relations are of sufficient importance to warrant the creation of a department whose business it is to be the company’s official ‘“ear-to-the-ground,” it was said.

OMIT RUNNING BOARD

Elimination of the conventional running board in the LincolnZephyr car provides more room inside the body. Instead of the running board, rubber covered scuff strips are provided.

GENERAL BOOM IN

BUSINESS OBSERVED

pti Reflected in Rise of Exports, Imports.

A worldwide upturn in business is reflected in the increase of American exports and imports, Arvid L. Frank, South Bend, president of the Studebaker Export Corporation, said last week. Mr. Frank said American exports and imports for 1937 would total ap-

proximately five three-fourths billion

dollars about evenly balanced between exports and imports.” Last year, he said, they totaled about four three-fourths billions. Largest 1936 export item, Mr. Frank said, was cotton, which accounted for 14.9 per cent of the total. Motor cars and parts were second with 9.9 per cent; leaf tobacco third with 5.7; electric machinery fourth with 3.8, and crude petroleum fifth with 2.7 per cent.

PLYMOUTH RURAL - MODEL ANNOUNCED

Times Special DETROIT, June 26.—A line of 1937 Plymouth models, specially designed for smoother travel over the deep-rutted roads of the nation’s rural sections, was announced this week by the Chrysler Corp. Plymouth division. The cars are designed to be specially useful to farmers, rural mail carriers, doctors, oil-field workers and others who must travel over back roads and unimproved highways. To enable them to travel through mud and snow, and over the high crowns of country roads, the new special models have a higher road clearance of 97% inches, which is 1% inches greater than standard design. They have 20-inch metal disc wheels.
