TRADING IN WEEK LOWEST IN 2 YEARS
NEW YORK, June 26.—Trading on the New York Stock Exchange fell off to around the lightest levels in two years during the past week as prices made an irregular decline. Uncertainty over the steel strike situation was a dominant factor. Failure of the Mediation Board to get both sides togethr was regarded as unfavorable late in the week. Before that the market had several periods of rally but none with accompaniment of activity hose who wished to Y buy stock were unwilling to risk commitments at this time, and the shorts were equally reticent about risking a favorable development in the steel troubles. Thus the market practically was deadlocked so far as business was concerned. In not a single five-

Bonds followed the action of stocks but commodities had several ' periods of strength and closed the week higher. Business advanced on the averaze although steel operations hit a new low for the year and electricity output dipped from the previous week. The latter Pin was more than 11 per cent above the corresponding period of 1936 and for the first half will break all records. Automobile makers were not troubled with strikes this week and production gained sharply. Other gains noted were in gdvertising, construction (this made a new 6-year high), cement output car loadings, lumber production and trade. The latter was not as favorable as recently, being impeded by strike shutdowns which curtailed buying power. The European situation had in it several items that were considered unfavorable. The lum Cabinet resigned over the financial troubles. Italy and Germany withdrew from the Spanish Patrol and sent ships to the Mediterranean. The British on Friday moved to increase their equalization fund by a billion dollars to offset vast amounts of so-called hot money that has come there to seek safe refuge. These funds could theoretically be withdrawn on short notice and the British seek to have an offsetting Supply of money or gold in event they ar On the favorable side Bere many excellent earnings reports and higher earnings. Wall Street gencrally ignored the good news and paid attention only to labor news. That accounted for a break in railroad issues in the face of favorable earnings and a contraseasonal rise in car loadings.
