STATE EXPANDS SCHOOL LUNCH WORK BY WPA

Every County Is to Be Given Service Next Fall, Official Says.

The Works Progress Administration school lunch program, tried out in five cities last year, is to be expanded to every county in the state next fall, John K. Jennings, state WPA administrator, announced today. Mr. Jennings estimated that be- | tween 5000 and 6000 grade school pupils will be served daily lunches during the coming school term. School superintendents in every city and county have been asked to help get the projects under way before the opening of classes in September. At least 250 projects are expected to be set up throughout the state. - School officials in cities where the plan was tried last year reported that the health of many undernourished children was improved, raising the quality of their school work. . Mr. Jennings explained that lunches will be served free to all children to avoid singling out children from needy families. Parents of means, however, will be expected to make cash or food contributions to sponsors. . The projects will be sponsored by school cities and county school superintei:dents. Cooking supervisors will be furnished by the WPA: Division of Women’s Professional Projects. One supervising cook will be supplied for every 20 to 25 children, Mr. Jennings said. : Food to be served is to include that which usually is lacking in the home. Supervising cooks will be instructed to provide special food for exceptioally undernournished pupils.
