private work, showed a 76 per cent increase during the first five months of 1937 over the corresponding 1936 period, F. W. Dodge Corp. reports showed today. A summary of the corporation’s daily construction news showed an average gain of 17 per cent for total construction throughout 37 Eastern states during this period.

A reception is to be held Sunday marking the 80th birtnday of Mrs. Mary: Kinney, 1430 S. Harding St., who moved here 44 years ago from a Mooresville log cabin, Mrs. Kinney’s birthday is Monday. More than 100 friends and relatives are expected to attend the reception at the home of her son, John Kinney, 4228 Graceland Ave. Her husband, Van Kinney, a machinist, died six years ago. Mrs.
Star, Friends Church and the W. C. T. U, and asys she “has always voted the Republican ticket.”
ARIZONA EXPEDITION RECRUIT’S MAN HERE
Dan P. Morse, 3649 N. Pennsylvania St., today was with the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley scientific expedition on his way to northern Arizona. : Mr. Morse joined the expedition yesterday as the choice from this year’s Purdue University graduating class to serve as assistant to the scientists. : ;
RAMMED STEAMER SINKS By United Press ’ ROME, June 25.—The . Genoa Shipping Co. announced today that the 10,000-ton Spanish cargo boat Magallenes rammed and sank the 5000-ton Italian steamer Capo Pino in a fog in the Dardanelles Straits today. The 12 passengers were Saved but the cargo of wheat was ost.

Local contract awards totaled $5,178,700 from Jan. 1 to May 31. For the same period in 1936 this figure was $2,947,200.
Contracts Gain Sharply
Residential contracts awarded during the five-month period in the Indianapolis area made the sharp ‘gain of 84 per cent over the awards in those months of 1936. This local gain exceeded the 62 per cent average gain for residential construction which was recorded for all of the 37 states ‘east of the Rocky Mountains. The value of these local contracts, at the close of May totaled $1,991,400, of which $1,922,600 was for new construction and $68,800 for alterations. The
