Victory Over . Carolyn Varin .

Miss Harriett Randall and ‘Mrs. Charles Greathouse Also Advance.

Dorothy Ellis, defending champion, advanced to the semifinals in the women’s city golf championship tournament at Hillcrest today by a 2 and 1 victory over Carolyn Varin. Others advancing were Harriet Randall, who defeated Mrs. Ralph Tlood 7 and 5; Mrs. F. P. Davis, who downed Lillian Rees 3 and 1, and Mrs. Charles Greathouse, who lefeated Mary Gorham 1 up on ‘he 18th. | Tomorrow's pairings bring to~ether Miss Ellis against Miss Ranjall and Mrs, Greathouse against ‘Mrs. Davis. Miss Ellis, who has been favoring a blistered right hand, was short on Her drives and was one down on the first nine. She picked up, however, on the 10th, 14th and 15th holes. The entire field of 55 golfers played yesterday in the various con- . solation flights. Most of those who *had fallen into the first-day selfclassification of “dubs” had pulled back up to par yesterday and their smiles on the Coutry Club veranda: showed it. The putting contest, held on the small green in front of the clubhouse, was won by Mrs. E. D. Lukenbill, Pleasant Run, who went the round in a 33. There were several others tied for the next positions and playoffs for them will be held

today. y Consolation Flights

Wrestler Draws Record Penalty

Sam Murbargar, chief inspector of the Indiana Athletic Commission, today meted out the longest suspension on record in the Hoosier state .when he placed a two-year ban on Nanjo Singh, heavyweight wrestler of India. Singh was disqualfied in a bout with Walter Podolak of New York at Sports Arena last night after 17 minutes of grappling. Murbarger ordered the match halted and the New Yorker was declared the winner. Singh was charged with using rough tactics in spite of constant warning by the referee. Dan O'Connor, 222, Boston, won the main event at the North Pennsylvania St. arena with two out of three falls. from Oki Shikina, 205, Japan. Shikina took the first fall with a flying hiplock and body press. O'Connor then came back to take the last two falls with a back surfboard, flying kick, and body press. Dorve Roche, 220, Decatur, Ill, threw Roughhouse Nelson, 217, Baltimore, a newcomer, in 15 minutes with a body press and a flying tackle.

Husky Crew Again on Top

By Thnited Press POUGHKEEPSIE, N. Y., June 23. —The second clean sweep of the Poughkeepsie regatta in as many years by the University of Washington’s crewmen was a warning today to next year’s challengers that the world champion Huskies from the Pacific Northwest might be immune to defeat. The performances ot the Jayvee and freshman crews in yesterday's 39th renewal of the International Rowing Association Regatta on the Hudson was the tipoff to what may be expected in 1938, for most of the members of those eights will be on hand next year. A year ago the Huskies scored the first triple victory in the history of the Hudson River classic. Yesterday, the young giants who followed their 1936 victory with a .triumpn in the Olympic Games, won. the four-mile varsity event to round out their second consecutive clean sweep of the intercollegiate blue-ribbon rowing event.

Toledo Opens Grand Circuit

Racing Monday

‘Trotting Season to Extend

For 13 Weeks, Closing At Lexington.

By United Press TOLEDO, June 23.—The 64th edition of the Grand Circuit, major league trotting horse loop, swings into action at Toledo Monday for an 1l-city, 13-week run which ends in early October at Lexington, Ky. Nearly nine months of intensive preparation have been getting the top-flight trotters and pacers into the “pink” for the three-months’ grind. New starting rules, formulated to eliminate tedious “scoring” of harness horses, are expected to make the 1937 Grand Circuit the turning point on the trotting turf from the public’s standpoint. The new regulations are rigid, with severe penalties for infractions, thus providing every means for faster starts and less jockeying about on the racing strip. This improvement, together with the steady increase in numbers of campaigning horses, men, tracks and the influx of amateurs of local and national prominence points toward the harness turf’s best season in "0 years. Handicap dashes of a mile or a mile and a half are being introduced this season, to eliminate in part the three-heat plan of racing.
