SELFISH LABOR OR CAPITAL HELD
KEY TO FAILURE
Exploitation by Either Will Doom Both, Purdue Conferees Hear.
Times Special LAFAYETTE, June 22.—Exploitation of the public by labor and capital will doom both to failure, David E. Ross, inventor, industrialist and Purdue University Board of Trustees president, said today at the Purdue Institute of American botiey and Technology. He was one of several speakers on the second-day program of the institute, attended by educational leaders. Others on today’s program were Dr. Ellsworth Huntington, Yale professor of human geography; Dr. Walter B. Pitkin, lecturer and author; Dr. Clarence A. Mills, University of Cincinnati, and Dean A. A. Potter of Purdue engineering schools. .
One Generation Dropped
Referring to a reactionary cycle which he said has caused capital complexities and troubles, Mr. Ross said: “We are enforcing the old adage, ‘shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations.” However, it looks as if one generation will be eliminated.” “The machine has been blamed for unemployment, but machines create jobs,” Dr, Potter said. “This is evidenced by the fact that during the last 50 years wage earners in factories have increased more than three times and wages
actually,
have been multiplied more than 12 times, while population was increased only two and one-half times.” Dr. Mills presented the principal factors affecting the energetics of human existence, laying the basis for presentation in future lectures the workings of these principles in various_phases of life’s problems. People Called Destructive
Dr. Huntington said. that the “situation of nations in respect to physical and cultural environment and stage of culture is exactly like that of the man in the blizzard, except the relationships are vastly more complex.” Americans are destiogtiig wealth faster than they are creating it, Dr. Pitkin said. “Our current profit-and-loss sheet reveals astounding ruin day by day,” he said. America Blamed for Crisis He said capital values are being lost annually in Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico and Maine. In an address at last night's session, he said that the crisis in world civilization has been caused by Americans’ dream for progress, universal comfort and security. “In the last 50 years,” he said, “America has created a world of monstrous inequalities, not maliciously, but simply as a result of the fact that America is the richest spot
