Early Firmness Lost; Kresge Jumps 8 Points.
By United Press NEW YORK, June 19. — Stocks moved narrowly in dull trading today with utilities firm, steels and mercantile issues mixed and other groups slightly lower. Developments in the steel. situation, including declaration of martial law in Johnstown, Pa., brought caution in the market. Bears were
reticent to sell lest steel troubles be |
cleared up suddenly. Prospective buyers withdrew on fears of new difficulties. Trading lagged along without feature. Many issues firmed small amounts early, but gains were subsequently wiped out. Bonds moved narrowly. Cotton futures turned easy near the close. Kresge Department Stores preferred rose 812 points to 115, widest move on the %oard. American Can and American Car & Xoundry gained a point. Atchison lost a] point. Other changes among leaders | were fractional.

Steel Outlook Turns Market Up in Week
By United Press NEW YORK, June 19.—The stock
market reversed a sharp down-trend this week when it appeared as if the steel strike _might soon be ad-
justed. Before the upturn the niet sank to new lows for the year on Monday. The industrial average that day lost 4 points in one of the most severe setbacks of the year with trading 1,310,000 shares, the hedviest since May 13. The utility average made a new low since 1935 but the rail average just escaped going through its 1937 minimum. A rally Tuesday was followed by a decline: Wednesday but the list held above the lows made Monday. On Thursday the steel strike appeared | to the trading element to be nearing its end especially since the Government was showing an interest in it to the extent of appointing a board of three headed by Charles P. Taft II, to study the situation from both sides. The rally was continued in the remaining five-hour session Friay at a slower pace. 2 Trading for the week, thanks to the large volume on the declining days, was the highest since the week ended May 15. There were two days above the million share mark and the average for the five-hour sessions was 978,000 shares daily. Small Change Noted The net result for the week was about a standoff as compared with the previous week. The utility group _made the best showing, regaining all its losses and closing the week higher. Ofl shares also were good performers on outlook for higher earnings. Railroall issues made progress in several sessions although late in the week their progress was retarded by outlook for labor difficulties in the near future. Steels moved over a wide area and late in the week showed strength. Auburn Automobile had a severe sinking spell but steadied. Other motors made new lows and then rallied. A long list of indvidual issues was depressed sharply. Bonds declined on the week with utilities the exceptions. Commodities improved. The foreign situation was less complicated although the French were experiencing financial difficulties and Russia had political frgubles,

Johns-Manville Plant to Make Low Temperature Insulation.
Times Special NEW YORK, —June 17.—Johns Manville Corporation has concluded negotiations for the purchase of the Richmond, Ind, plant of the Fibre Conduit Company and intends to begin installation about July 1, of equipment for the manufacture of a new type of low temperature insulation recently perfected in the Johns Manville Lab-
oratories, Lewis H. Brown, presi-
dent announced here today.
This is the second new manu-
facturing unit to be announced by
this company within two weeks.
Work is to be started soon on the construction of a plant at Watson, Calif. for the manufacture of rock wool home insulation and transite asbestos-cement pipe. It is expected that the new Rich-
mond unit will employ about 150 persons when operations get underway Mr. Brown said. The plant, with 150,000 square feet of floor space, consists of three brick and steel buildings, two. of them two
stories high and a power plant.
It is located on a 30 acre plot
of ground and is served by a spur from the Pennsylvania Railroad.’ Built by the Fibre Conduit Company in 1926 it is now being vacated by this company due to a
consolidation of its manufacturing
activities in its Orangeburg, N. Y,, factory. The new type of low temperature insulating material to be placed in production in Richmond has been introduced after years of research
laboratory development by Johns
Manville, Mr. Brown said and: it is covered by basic patents. Characteristics of the produce include high insulating efficiency and lightness in weight which adapt it particularly for use on railroad passenger and refrigerator cars, mechanical refrigerators and for sound deadening as well as thermal insulation on automobile bodies. - At the present time production of this’ new material is all that is contemplated for the Richmond
site Mr. Brown said, although the strategic location of this plant near
the center of the midwest market may result later in the manufacture of some Johns Manville Building Material products here. Mr. Brown said that the management staff for the new plant will be recruited from existing Johns Manville factories but practically all others of the contem-
% plated 150 employees will be en-
gaged. locally. Johns. Manville’s business was established 79 years ago and today this. company is one of the most diversified of American manufacturers. selling fo and serving all basic industrial insulations and refractories and is a leading manufacturer of building materials,
acoustical products, brake - linings
and other allied lines.

Top Reaches $11.65 With
Lights Showing Most Advance.
Light receipts proved the main incentive in boosting hog prices substantially as reported by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, U., S. Department of Agriculture. A rise of 15 cents on weights above 160 pounds and 25 cents on light lights and pigs placed levels 25 cents to 35 cents above the close of last week. $11, the highest point since the first of June. Sows shared most of the day’s advance, ranging strong to 25 cents higher at $9.75 to $10.35, with the top $10.50. Hog receipts were estimated at 1000 head. Compared with close of last week, fed steers and heifers were 25-50

IDEAL WEATHER CAUSES 2-GENT DROP IN WHEAT
Corn Prices Decline While Other Grains Ease Slightly.
By United Press CHICAGO, June 19.—Quiet liquidation brought out by weakness abroad and ideal weather conditions
over much of the North American grain belt forced wheat prices down
for moderate losses today on the Chicago Board of Trade. At the close wheat was 13; to 2% cents lower, July $1.07; new corn was 1% to 1% cents lower, July $1.12%; old corn was 11; cents lowe er, July $1.121%; and oats were 1; to 7s cent lower, July 39% cents. Weather reports showed ideal conditions in the harvest belt of the Southwest. Unsettled weather existed in the Canadian West and it was believed that further rains would be reczived over the weeke end. Corn prices here reflected the dee cline in- wheat. Favorable weather conditions checked buying power and selling brought out by the weakness in wheat pushed values back about a cent a bushel. Sais and rye showed a soft undertone.
