G-MEN HEROES “AND RELATIVES PAID TRIBUTES
Hoover Extols Fortitude of Slain Agents’ Families.
By ALLEN DIBBLE United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, June 18.—J. Edgar Hoover, Federal Bureau of Investigation director, has paid tribute to the widows and mothers of G-Men as the “inconspicuous heroines” of the nation’s crime-fight-ing agency. “After all,” said Mr. Hoover, “I wonder if the hardest and greatest work in law enforcement is not performed by the women who must see her husband or son go forth to danger and know there is nothing left, for her but to count the minutes and the long hours which must ensue before the news reaches her of her loved one’s safety or loss. | “A number of tragedies have afflicted our bureau when it has been necessary to convey to these martyrs the information that a | chair will be empty at the family table and that the golden badge of a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation no longer possesses a wearer, that a new name must be placed on the bronze tablet by which we revere and remember our heroes.
All Praised for Bravery
“In not one instance has the woman martyr failed of bravery, in not one instance has she failed to continue her loyalty without thought of bitterness, in not one instance has her faithful enthusiasm subsided,” Hoover said. The bronze plate in FBI headquarters here now bears the names of all special agents, who, according to Hoover, “have been removed from the ranks of the living by the bullets of cowardly criminality.” The latest name added to the tablet was that of Truett E. Rowe, of the El Paso division, slain at |a Gallup, N. M,, ranch house. There is no congressional appropriation for an award to widows or dependents of Federal agents, but each G-man contributes $10 to a special: fund for immediate payment after the death of one of their comrades. The fund amounts to more than $6000. Eloquent Tribute Paid Mr. Hoover declared the slain agents “died that we might be safe.” “I knew them all—quiet, sincere, loyal and faithful workers—such men as Herman Hollis and Samuel Cowley, who died facing the rattle of automatic firearms in the hands of “Baby Face” Nelson and his cowardly companion, John Paul Chase, at East Barrington, 111,” ‘he recalled. 3 : He said Mr. Cowley was planning to come to Washington headquarters as an inspector when “he left his desk at the call of action and swung up that road at East Barrington, ready to give everything he possessed. even to his life. “And when he made his ultimate sacrifice.” the G-Man chief concluded, “there was no beating of the drums, no dipping of flags, no long roll of military farewell, no solemn sound of marching bands to say ‘farewell’ to Sam Cowley. And yet, he was a hero and he was a pioneer.”
