DUSTY STREETS MAY GET OILED MORE RAPIDLY
City Employees’ Work Week Is Increased and ~ Grader Added.
An increase of eight hours in the
work week of City street depart-! th| paved which total 484 miles,” he
ment employees may enable the City to rid all property owners on unimproved streets of the summer dust nuisance by the middle of August, Street Cominissioner Fred Eisenhut said today. “Heretofore,” he said, | “it. has taken until the end of November to grade and oil the streets. But now that we are working on a 40-hour week and have! one new grader, we

hope to have it done faster than ever before, if the weather man gives us a break.”
The Street Commissioner said that last year employees worked a 32-hour week with five graders instead of six. “People call us and expect us to be out the next day to oil their street,” he continued, “but they don’t realize the magnitude of the task of caring for the-316 miles of
‘unimproved streets in the city.”
484 Miles Paved
¥“The person who drives from one end of the city to the other without seeing a dirt road probably does not realize that the mileage of unimproved streets is almost as great as
said. The department tries to oil the mast traveled streets first. During good weather, 20 miles of road a week are treated, Mr. Eisenhut said.
Automobile drivers, he added, have less to fear on city dirt roads than 3 because the City department
does not us so thick a grade of oil or | mix it with gravel as the State

does. Two days after it is laid down,
cars can travel on it without splat-
i tering their fenders, he sated.
Oil Price Rising The rising price of oil this summer will somewhat decrease the gallonage provided by the $12,000

appropriation in the budget, he said. Last year $12,000 bought 240,000 gallons. The federal Government, has provided eight carloads to be distribited on WPA streets, he said, but pointed out there may not be enough oil to go around.
