Bored Beau, Girl Is’ Is Told

Men Who Do Not Enjoy Sharing Thoughts Held

Pore Mates. |

I Put your problems in a letter ta Jane Jordan who will answer your qudstions in this column| daily.

EAR JANE JORDAN—Often you have written that a fellow soon loses interest in a girl [if he

and see him |and I am too weak to stay away..| Today I am going straight home om work and I am sure he|willwonder if something is wrong Fe 11 me. Do you think he really asks me to come and see him just to be polite, or does he really want to see; me? I like him an awful lot and would hate Yery much to lose him. JEANNE.

ANSWER—If I said that every young man tired of the girl he sees every day I should not have done so for it is not always true. A man in the grip of infatuation for a girl apparently can stand any amount of her company without tiring. Again some young men never would have fallen in love at all except for the propinquity of the young lady. There are men who simply cannot stand long stretches of feminine companionship in or out of marriage without suffering from ennui. They are only half sold on the idea of double harness anyway, and would like the impossible combination of being both bound and free. As a rule such men do not make =good "husbands from a woman's point of view because they require so much time away from home. We find them spending week-ends and holidays in fishing, golfing, or any activity which removes them from the domestic scene while the wife sits at home with the children. They are married men who are still bachelors at heart. To be out witih the fellows means more than to be at home with the Kids. I do not know your voung man but it is fairly obvious that he is not as dependent upon your society as ‘you are upon his. My guess is that he does not have a talent for sharing his thoughts with anqther, particularly ja woman. Of course you attract him, but in certain moods he regards you as an intruder in the part of his life which you do not share, | The answer to a maiden’s prayer is the man who tells all after a brief separatig 2 and then, in turn, hears all with interest. If your lover will not or cannot let you in his private thoughts and is not interested in yours, you have an unsatisfactory combina- - tion which will leave you with a feeling of unfulfillment as long as the partnership lasts. ° JANE JORDAN

Material, Finish, Cut Criterion of Quality

In the days when truly tubfast and sunfast dyes were scarce and costly printed patterns were confined mostly to cheaper grades of shirts. Today the implication of poor quality with printed patterns has little basis in fact. Dyes and printing technique have been so perfected that the quality of a shirt is determined more by fineness of material, cutting and finishing than whether the color was woven in or printed on.

Jewelled Bandeaux Are New Ring Styles

The newest dinner rings are jewelled bandeaux instead of plain rings with huge stones. In silver as well as platinum and gold, they are set with all kinds of stones at all prices. One especially handsome bandeau ring of the luxurious variety is a wide platinum band, studded with rubies. A less pretentious model 1s of old-looking silver with tiny pieces of turquoise set in all the way around.

HE Duchess of Windsor not only has a new husband, but a new hairdress! Apparently weary of her widely publicized, simple, parted-in-the-middle coiffure, the former Wallis Warfield had Antoine of Paris create the mode sketched here for her. | The hair is parted in the middle only at the front, then waved softly backward to show the Duchess’ ears. Two flat curls fill in the space behind the ears, and the back of the hair is divided into two strands pinned low on the

Small Makeup Kit Meets All

Woman’s Needs

By ALICIA HART NEA Service Staff Writer In spite of its [diminutive dimensions when folded, a new makeup kit holds every item any woman needs. Covered with leather and lined with waterproof fabric, this is attractive on a dresser and especiilly handy for travelers. There's even a bit of extra space for personal items such as a toothbrush and cleansing’ tissues. Also new is a clear, light red lipstick for the days when you wear beige or gray. ‘An eye health kit is something to consider, particularly if spring sunshine and new hats have brought to your attention the fact that your eyes look a little tired now and then. One Kkit—an old tavorite, really—includes a lotion gto wash away dust and dirt; a Cream to correct fine lines and wrinkles; sterilized pads to be moistened in warm water and placed on closed

lids to relieve fatigue and eye strain.

PLAYS TRUMP CAREFULLY

Today's Contract Problem North's contract is seven no trump. The opening lead gives him a free fimesse against the only card higher than a jack held by his opponents. Should he play the jack or ten, and thus guarantee himself against a possible heart loser? AQJ10 YKIo4 ¢J102 HoQ752

Solution to Previous Problem

By WILLIAM E. M’KENNEY American Bridge League Secretary ~HE proper handling of @ the trump suit frequently presents a problem, and many a contract at bridge is lost either because the declarer did not know the principles of trump management, or carelessly neglected to apply his knowledge to the concrete problem which confronted him. Today’s hand is an apt illustration of ar oft recurring and frequently misplayed trump situation, where it requires foresight to capture the outstanding trump honor if it is guarded more than twice. The favorable location of that card and ability to play the hand so as not to lose a single trump trick is the sole matter at issue. West, in response to his partner's

bid, rightly decides to show his own suit, rather than raise his partner immediately with but three trumps or bid no trump. East had a choice of rebids,, but in any case four spades should be the final contract.

After North and South took two heart tricks, East ruffed the third round. He then led a diamond to dummy, to take the trump finesse. North won and returned a club, and a second diamond was won with dummy’s king. The first step in the successful play of the hand had been taken. East now led the spade nine from dummy. This play assured him of the ability to capture the king, even if North held it and three others. North did not cover, and the queen was played next, Now East was rewarded for his careful trump management. While North covered, it was of no avail. Ecst’s jack and 10 picked up his two remaining trumps, and the four high clubs. won the remainder of the tricks.

man stripes, flowers and prints. Two of the most amusing prints are small white lambs with red collars on a black background for afternoon dress with a black patent leather belt, embossed white lamb and white gown printed with green artichokes and tiny red hearts. The Rochas silhouette in general is slim, straight and with a shorter skirt, natural waistline and shoulders elevated only slightly. Evening gowns are particularly colorful with rainbow stripes used hoth vertically and horizontally and worn with striped sequin belts carrying out the same brilliant colors as the material. Beading is an important feature of most evening clothes. One gown of white slipper satin has cap sleeves and fringe entirely of large crystal beads. A new type of dinner gown shown by Rochas has a full skirt of tulle or chiffon with bright taffeta top made with a lowcut neckline and short sleeves.

Influence of Others Held Aid to to Child

Writer Says Yo Youngsters’ Outside Interests Are Beneficial.

By OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON One time 1 wrote an article that went something like this: : “If 3-year-old Mamie won't get her face washed, or spatters her cereal over the table with her spoon to see how far she can bat, it might be useful to remind her of some one she knows and likes very much. What would Miss Etta say, for instance, if she saw her little friend all dirty and tousled? Or what would Stubby think, that nice clean little doggie that ate and drank with agility and dispatch and never left a spot on the floor?” I got some retorts on that one. For goodness sake! Why couldnt I get over all that palaver about bad youngsters? Why did I help to spoil hundreds of small children who needed a good smack or two to straighten them out?

Children Forgot Trouncings

1 often wonder how the smackers mada out. At the age of 3 there is something mighty perverse In

most children. And unless a child is completely cowed by fear, he is likely. to bob up after a trouncing as serene as a rolypoly ash-stand. The matter that brought this back to memory was a talk with the mother of a 12-year-old boy. She was very proud of Bucky. Bucky, 1 discovered, was as busy as a frog in the milk pail. And like said frog was assiduously churning up good footing for the future. He, Bucky, was in the junior orchestra. He was a Scout. He was a stamp collector. Naturally he had his lessons to do; and, of course, he had to eat, sleep and bathe. “Dear me, do you ever see him?” I wondered. “He hardly needs parents at all, does he?”

Leaders Are Heroes

“No, I often think that,” she sighed. “But when I consider the influence of the people who are training him, I wouldn't change it. He adores his orchestra leader, Mr. Grimm. How could I ever get him to practice? I couldn’t—that’s. all. And as for his scoutmaster—really, Bucky would go through fire and water for him. It is his uncle who got him interested in stamps. They are such friends, and Phil has such a wonderful influence over him, I often say to Jim, my husband, they are more like brothers.” Back to the babies; what great difference is there between Mamie

High Blood

Pressure Is Mystery,

True Cause Unknown, But Factors Have Been Determined.

By DR. MORRIS FISHBEIN Editor American Medical Association Journal.

The exact relationship of high blood pressure to hardening of the arteries is not definitely detere mined. . , There seem to be some cases in which hardening of the arteries occurs first in the very finest filaments so that it is not easily determinable.

Some investigators believe that the high blood: pressure occurs first and that the hardening of the are teries is secondary. It is simply because of the lack of exact knowledge that we recognize certain forms of high blood pressure as essential or idopathic, indicating that their causes are not known. : i Climate Held Factor

. Some investigators feel that cere tain climates result in high blood pressure.’ Others assert that a diet

| which is too rich in proteins evene

tually will result in high blood | pressure. Certainly there are pome :

families in which high blood “press sure is hereditary. Fat people are more likely to have high blood pressure than are thin ones.. The insurance companies consider the fat man a less suitable risk than a thin one. Overweight is generally conside ered an associate of the beginning of various degénerative diseases which today are responsible for the majority of deaths. For that reason, it is customary to recommend reduction of weight after middle age and particularly when there is high blood pressure.

Nervous Strain Cause

Prolohged nervous strain |is age sociated frequently with high blood pressure and those who have this condition without any chronic in= flammation of the kidneys, without any overactivity of the thyroid gland and without any other demonstrable diseases are someunes leit to have a high blood pressure hecause of their nervous condition, Many people with high blood pressure live a long time, but insurance companies are so convinced that the presence of this condition is|a definite menace to long life th t they freqeuently .refuse to insure| people with very high blood pressures. Some companies will insure those with high blood pressures provided

they are willing to pay an exgess fee,
