MORE CHILDREN AREREQUESTING WORK PERMITS

Increase Indicates Jobs Are More Plentiful, School Officials Say.

Members of the Indianapolis public schools social service department tdoay viewed the increase in requests for working permits among children between the ages of 14 to 16, as a sign of a better era of employment, Miss Thelma, Taylor, work permit officer, reported 300 vacation permits have been issued to children in this age group for the first six months of the year compared to only 178 issued in 1936. “Of course the children are merely given the permits and it is not necessary for them to have jobs but the increased number indicates they believe they will get summer employment,” Miss Taylor said. ! N Permits for minors, 16 to 21 years of age, show a slight increase in 1937 over the same half-year period of 1936. A total of 1304 permits were issues in this classification in 1936 compared to 1353 up to today in 1937. Jobs Required

Miss Taylor, however. pointed out that since May youths seeking minor permits have been required to have jobs before a permit is issued. “Approximately 200 of the 1352 permits were issued under the ruling that they must first have jobs. Minor permits would have shown a greater increase this year over last year if an additional 200 applications for permits, which were refused until jobs could be obtained, were listed in the total issued,” Miss Taylor explained. William A. Hacker, assistant school superintendent, is director of the social service department and the division issuing work perpits to adolescents.

By United Press SHANGHAI, June 16.—A dispatch to the newspaper Takungpao said today that 400 persons were killed in the town of Sanyang, Shensi province, when a detachinent of the Peace Preservation Corps rebelled and occupied the city. - i It was understood the mutineers were troops formerly commanded! by Gen. Yang Hu-Cheng, former Manchurian commander who kidnaped Generalissimo Chiang Kaishek in Shenshi last December and held him prisoner for two weeks. The dispatch said | that Gen. Yang, who has been pardoned by Chiang and given funds for a tour of the United States| and Europe, was said to have left orders with " subordinates that the rebellious troops be cared for during his ab- | sence, , The troops did not know this and rebelled because they believed they were being. left penniless. Of the dead, 300 were members of loyal! units which attempted to repel the | mutiny. The remainder were merchants and townspeople.
