'Last Train From Madrid’ Is Strictly Neutral, Studio Claims.
Hollywood's Name Really Isn't Right That's. Why Culver City
Says It Can Take It Over.
Times Special | HOLLYWOOD, June 15.—Holly= wood has completed its first feature with warring Spain used as a back= ground. It is called “The Last Train From Madrid.” The title may be taken literally, according to Paramount, because the screen play concerns fictitious active | ities in the beleaguered capital, over a 24-hour period, which are climaxed when a train leaves the city loaded with refugees. The studio reports extraordinary measures were taken during produce tion and editing of “The Last Train From Madrid” to keep its attitude toward the revolutions strictly nonpartisan, Efforts were made to keep even uniforms of soldier-actors strictly neutral. “So strong are sympathies throughout the world for different factions at war in Spain,” observed Joe Kaplan, who was in charge of the wardrobe for “Last Train From Madrid,” “that we did not use any colors in costumes that might suggest the players belong to either side. This is especially difficulf in the case of the army uniforms. You will see soldiers throughout the film, but it was our problem to make it impossible for audiences to distin=guish to which side the soldiers be= long.” :
SHATTERS S. A. RECORD
Cecil B. De Mille today was in= formed by letter from John Nathan, ‘Paramount representative in South America, ‘that “The Plainsman” has broken all gross and attendance records in the long history of the Suipacka Theater in Buenos Aires, where it opened two weeks ago.

HOLLYWOOD, June 15 (NEA).—A good many persons are likely to be puzzled by echoes of the local furor over Culver City’s threat to appropriate, assume or steal the proud and glittering name of Hollywood. ? There hasn't been so much excitement over a posible rechristening since frustration of the move to change the name of Arkansas. Only nobody wanted to steal the | name of Arkansas, and in this case Hollywood is united in defense of its title. But for some tin signs marking the corporate limits of Los Angeles, Culver City is indistinguishable from its neighbors. Nobody but an engineer with a map can define the boundaries of Culver City, Westwood or Beverly Hills. Jealous of Hollywood's fame and believing that more motion pictures are made in Culver City than in Hollywood, Culver City decided that it should have the nominal credit. This wouldn't be as difficult as it sounds. What most movie fans don’t realize is that no motion picture was ever made in Hollywood for the simple reason that there isn’t any such place-as Hollywood. There was once, between the years of 1903 and 1910—a sixth-class city. But it’s all part of Los Angeles now.

If you write a fan letter to a movie star and address it “Hollywood, Cal.” it will come here and be redistributed, perhaps to Burbank, Culver City, Westwood, North Hollywood or wherever the proper studio happens to be. But that’s just an accommodation on the part of postal officials. Hollywood has no real postoffice of its own; the new building here is merely a
branch of the Los Angeles postoffice. Likewise, the department stores are branches of Los Angeles stores; the banks are branch banks. You can’t possibly take a train to Hol-
