"JENNINGS SAYS
Some Local Projects May ‘Be Lost After July 1, He Reports.
“The WPA is not a dole,” John J. Jennings, State Administrator, said today in announcing that WPA will not continue to employ any persons

ment at the wage rate prevailing in the community, i “Anyone turning down such a job will be dropped from the WPA rolls forever,” Mr. Jennings said. Simultaneously, Mr. Jennings indicated some Indianapolis and Marion County projects might be dropped along with others in the State ynder a plan to eliminate four types of jobs. He explained, however, that a survey is to be made— and possibly ccmpleted by July 1— and that information will not be available until then.
Classifications Studied
Classes of projects studied are: Those having only small participation by sponsors; those requiring large exemptions because they cannot be operated efficiently at security wages; those inefficient because of the small numbers employed, and those in rural areas where the certi-

fied labor load is small and widely distributed. In announcing that WPA workers offered private employment must accept it, Mr. Jennings said: “WPA will tetminate employment when a worker refuses to accept private employment if it is determined that’ such employment is suitable to the training and experience of the worker and is full time to the extent of the prevailing number of hours and days normally required of workers in the gccupation and industry involved, ald that the wage paid is the standard rate, either weekly or monthly, for such full time employment.” Mr. Jennings said he had ordered notices posted to that effect on all the 1600 WPA projects now in operation throughout the state. He said another notice is to be posted, signed by Harry L. Hopkins,
Federal Administrator, which says ‘that “WPA workers who accept other employment after this date and lose such employment through no fault of ‘their own will be reassigned to WPA projects providing they are eligible.” Mr. Jennings pointed out the State’s total roll of 55,000 workers must be cut to comply with a reduced quota by July 15. “When the WPA discontinued making assignments and reassignments to projects on April 15, workers were leaving the rolls at the rate of 1600 a week, but since then the
number has dropped to 800,” Mr. Jennings reported. “Fearful of encountering difficulty in being reassigned to projects upon the termination of private employment was responsible for this difference.”
