U. S. EMBASSY REPORTS ITALY PACT PROGRESS
Claims Agreement Reached On Important Sections Of Trade Treaty.
ROME, June 11.—The United States Embassy has reached agreement with the Italian Government on the most important sections of the projected Italian-American treaty of commerce. friendship and navigation, an authoritative source revealed today. Conclusion of the pact now depends on Washington's approval. The Embassy is awaiting word from Washington on whether the text is now: satisfactory before putting the finishing touches to it. The greatest difficulty of the negotiators was in satisfying Washington's demand for most-favored-nation treatment. It was understood the new treaty contains a ‘preamble in which the Italian sovereign is designated as King of Italy and Emperor of Ethiopia, but jurists claim it is not tantamount to United States rec_ognition of Italy's Ethiopian conquest.
No Conclusion Reached, Officials Say By United Pres: WASHINGTON, June 11.—Negotiations for & new treaty of friendship, commerce and navigation between the United States and Italy _Yo replace the existing treaty signed In 1871 have] been in progress since
Jast Decemler but have reache
o definite artment. officials said today. | They declined to comment on reports from Rome that the preamble
of the propased new treaty desigated | King Emmanuel as “King of taly land Emperor of Ethiopia.” They said serious consideration had Bot been given to the preamble, nasmuch as 'a number of points in the body of the proposed treaty have not been agpeed upon. The official viewpoint here is that regardless of the title accorded to King Emmanuel in the preamble or the treaty itself, the question of American diplomatic recognition of Italy’s conquest of Ethiopia is not involved in the treaty negotiations. Also, it was emphasized, this is not a reciprocal trade treaty, but is, instead, a paft of friendship, commerce and navigation dealing with general commerce rather than with specific commodities.

FLOOD PROJECT MAY BE BEGUN ~ BYJAN.1,1938
City Control Board Buys 10 Acres Along
Fall Creek.
Henry B. Steeg, City Engineer, said today that the City Flood Control Board hoped to begin construction of the Fall Creek flood control project between 16th and 10th streets by the first of the year. The first step in the project was taken yesterday when the Board purchased about 10 acres of land on the east side of the creek. The purchase was made by right of eminent domain from the estates of Jane Cook and Pat Ward at a cost of $13,700. Ultimately the Board will own 50 acres on either side of the creek between 16th and 10th Sts, Mr. Steeg said. The City alreadys owns 15 acres on the site of the old pest house -on the west side. The remainder of the territory is owned by the Indiana Gravel Co. and ipdividual property owners. Mr. Steeg said the Board is seeking a resolution to condemn the rest of the ground. Negotiations with the Indiana Gravel Co. are under way he said. 2
Plant on New Strip
The company’s plant is located on the property which was acquired yesterday. : The final project envisions a levee and a boulevard on each side of the creek with a lake between. Some of it will be devoted to parks, Mr. Steeg said. Because of the narrowness of the channel where the bridge crosses the creek at Indiana Ave., the. curve of the creek at this point will be widened and a new bridge constructed. At another point, the channel is 1256 feet wide while the standard
channel width is 250 feet, Mr. Steeg said. =
