OPPOSE EARLE'S SUGGESTION ON U.S. OWNERSHIP

Pennsylvania Senators Are Against Government Control of Coal Industry.

Times Special !

WASHINGTON, June 11.—Both

Pennsylvania Senators are opposed to Governor George H. Eafle’s suggestion of state or Federal ownership or opgration of anthracite mines to end coal bootlegging and other ills of the hard coal industry.

Senator Davis (R.-Pa.) expressed full agreement with views stated earlier by Senator Guffey (D. Pa.) opposing the Governor’s threat that if the anthracite companies do not “set their house in order” he plans to move toward government control of at least a part of the industry. -Comment of a different kind came from Thomas Kennedy, Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania and secretary-treasurer of the United Mine Workers. “In my judgment,” said Mr. Kennedy, who comes from the anthracite region, ‘there is a great deal of merit in the proposal that the Federal Government control the coal lands. If we have this plus Federal regulation of the industry, of the type provided for bituminous coal by the Guffey Coal Act, we might get somewhere. I have in mind the elimination of large royalties to the landholders, possibly reduced railroad freight rates, and other economies that would place anthracite in a better. competitive position with other fuels.”
