Safety Committee Told Cost |
Of Parking Meters ~~ Unjustified.
————
| The Citizens’ Safety Committee today was to recommend that pos lice conduct a drive against bicycle riders who disobey traffic regula:
tions. it
At yesterday’s luncheon meeting in the Columbia Club, Todd Stoops, Hoosier Motor Club secretary-treas-urer, declared that “parking meters are not safety measures, nor dp they increase parking facilities.”
City officials recently have been
' studying the advisability of estab-
lishing meters here. r “Motorists already are paying for police protection,” Mr. Stoops said. “Unnecessary expense should not be heaped upon them. Police work would be simplified, but the added $200,000 tax on the motorists is not
Justified.” Defer Meter | Action Action on the parking meter question was deferred until the next meeting, June 24. | Dr. Herman G.: Morgan, City Health Board secretary and club president, appointed Edward Boren chairman of the committee to confer with City officials concerning the proposed bicycle riders safety drive. Other committee members are: John A. Schumacher, Paul E. Rathert and Ernest Trenton. Aid from the Indianapolis Boy Scouts was promised by Wallace O. Lee. Walter Hannon, Dr. Walter C. Byer, Charles Lutz and George Poske were elected members of the Safety Committee.
COUNTY CAN'T PAY $10,000 IN CLAIMS
Puzzled as to How to Meet Highway Costs.
Fabian Biemer, chief deputy auditor, announced today that Marion County will not be able to pay approximately $10,000 in highway claims, filed late last year, because of a recent ruling of the State Tax Board. These claims are for supplies sold to the county highway department. At that time there was no money to pay for materials. In its ruling last week, the State Tax Board held that county departments cannot exceed their appropriations for any year. Any debts contracted in excess of the appropriation cannot be paid, the Board said. : The Reilly Tar & Chemical Co. has the largest single claim against the county, totaling $3259.83. County highway funds have been all but exhausted in recent years, it was pointed out.
