Tony Manero, Defentiing Champ, Starts Poorly; Course Is Tough. |
{By HENRY M’LEMORE ‘nited Press Staff Correspondert OAKLAND} HILLS ‘COUNTRY CLUB, BIRMINGHAM, Mich. June 10.—Unperturbed by a chilly} wind and a water-soaked course. Mike Turnesa of Elmsford, N. Y., shot a sub-par, 71 today to take an early lead in the first round of the 41st National Open Golf Championship. Turnesa’s lead was short-lived, as Ed Dudley | of Philadelphia, and Frank Walsh «of Chicago, close friends playing together, turned in a pair of par-shattering 70s. Dudley went out in 35, and came home in the same number .of strokes, while Walsh had a par 36 going out, and was two under for 34 coming home. Bill Holt, Young Clay, N. Y., amateur, joined Dudley and Walsh in the select 70 group. He had his putter under perfect control and took a 35 for each nine. Yesterday Holt wagered $5 on himself to win the open at odds of 500 to 1.
Maréero Starts Slowly
Tony Manero, of Salem, Mass, the moustachioed defending champion, started poorly with 5-5-4, two over par. His partner, Harold Jip | McSpaden, Winchester, Mass., runnerup in the recent P. G. A, was one under after three holes. Lacey faltered coming home, needing a 38 for a 73. This gave him the lead on the field, but he didn’t have a chance to hold it. + Turnesa. the fourth man of the big field of 167 to tee off today, was out in‘ 35 2nd home in 36. Turnesa followed par perfectly on the outgoing nine until he reached the eighth, where he chipped in from 30 feet for a birdie. _ He varied from perfect figures but twice on the incoming nine. On the 11th hole he needed three to get on and went one over. On the home hole he ran down a long putt for a birdie four.
Champ in Difficulty Manero ran into difficulty on the first nine. taking 38 blows. He was over par on three holes and his iron game wavered, and birdied but one —the eighth, where he ran down a 12-foot putt. His playing partner, McSpaden, was out in 37. The last Open played over this course was in 1924, and was won by frail Cyril Walker with a four-

to the winner. ; One thing is certain—the boys aren't going to tear the Oakland Hills course apart. Its 7000 yards of length and brutal rough are too tough to be| manhandled. Surprisingly few subpar scores were registered in practice, and the tournament appeared to be as wide open as Marseilles when the fleet is in. The bookies) have a new favorite! every 10 minutes.

Just a bunch of sissies, these local amateurs.
A nice little tournament
arranged for them at Woodstock yesterday and did they come and |
play? No.
Somebody said they thought one® man showed. Since he couldn't play a tournament by himself, he went home, and who can blame him? He did his best. The tournament was postponed indefinitely. Too many other dates coming up soo: Maybe it can be slipped in somewhere after a couple of weeks. We can't understand why the boys got the fails. Maybe it was the rain, at that. We just happened to think. Something was out there making the greens soggy. Probably rain. Maybe that’s why nobody was playing at any of the courses we passed. hey were all empty. No,
Boxing Show Is Off for 2 Weeks
The boxing show scheduled to be held tonight at the Illinois outdoor arena, has been postponed for two weeks, the promoters announced late today. Cold weather and rain
forced the postponement. The 36-round card, featuring Frankie Hughes of Clinton, Ind. | and Jack Stanley of Columbus, O., in the main go, has been rescheduled for Wednesday night, June 23, at the same arena.
promise that by mid-day the narrow fairways and rolling greens would have recovered some of their speed. A surprisingly large gallery was horse-shoed around the starting tee when the first twosome of Ray Schwartz of St. Louis and Charley Lacey of New York laid their drives down the middle. One of the first starters was willie MacFarlane, the scholarly old stylist who won the open in 1925 the hard way—by beating Bob Jones in a playoff. And Willie proved he still has the touch by getting a birdie on the first hole when he ran down a 25-foot putt for a three. : Several hours before the field started” today - several men with mowers were sent out to do a little ‘trimming of the rough. The first fairway was widened several feet, and the grass surrounding the 12th hole was trimmed out considerably. The meanicuring was done on the order of the U. S. G. A.

Russ Stonehouse has a golf bag with more pockets than a snooker table and more gadgets than a Duesenberg. The place where he puts his clubs is just a minor cavity somewhere near the middle. It has a small but complete bar, a bowling alley, an umbrella stand and a dog racing track. He's thinking of jadding a collapsible swimming pool.
Golf dates are getting = thicker than flies, Today and tomorrow we keep one eye on the Open, where Bill and Ralph are trying to put on a decent show for the honor of old Coffin. Saturday and Sunday it’s the Country Club Derby and the Highland Fling. Monday the spotlight turns to Hillcrest for the first round of the District. Tuesday the boys move to Highland and Wednesday to Broadmoor. There are more than 130 entries for the 54-hole event and nearly 200 are expected to start. We almost forgot the women’s interclub matches at Broadmoor on Monday. After the District there are a few days of rest, broken by occasional club affairs, before the ladies meet in the city tournament at Hillcrest. On the 24th the Indianapolis Traffic Club goes to the Ulen course at Lebanon for the annual golf outing. On July 19 the Variety Club takes over the Country Club for the day. So it goes.
