were only beginning. It was comparatively easy to pro- | vide this trio of stars for the f{ic-| tional story of “This Is My Affair,” | set in the time of the McKinley and | Theodore Poosevelt administrations. | But to find players to impersonate Roosevelt, McKinley, Admiral Dewey | and other important men of the period was a harder task. layers not only had to resemble characters they | were to represent. but thev had to speak and act as these national figures spoke and acted. The studio knew there are many persons who knew Mr. Roosevelt, Mr. McKinley | and Admiral Dewey. and who would | notice any discrepancy in Makeup, | actions, voice or temperament.

| Studied Part Six. Months

Sidney Blackmer, cast as Teddy Roosevelt, spent six months study- | ing Roosevelt's pictures, phonograph ! recordings of his speeches, personal |

accounts and stories before he would risk even an audition before Producer Darryl F. Zanuck. He found the ex-President’s fa- | mous perpetual squint hardest to imitate, but former associates of Mr. Roosevelt who saw Mr. Blackmer’s characterization assured him his impersonation was “remarkable.” Frank Conroy is seen as William McKinley, and Robert McWade impersonates Admiral Dewey.

Doubles Are Available

Though creation of these parts admittedly was a difficult task, even for experienced actors, studio officials learned both Mr. Roosevelt and Mr. McKinley have many doubles in Hollywood's extra ranks. Nineteen Roosevelt doubles turned up at 20th Century-Fox. studios to apply for the role awarded Mr.. Blackmer, and eight McKinley doubles asked for the part of the assassinated President. Although the film is based in part on the assassination of President McKinley and Mr. Roosevelt's becoming President death, the story is entirely fictional.
