Mother Threatened Her With “Knife, She and Friend to Tell Court.

By United Press JERSEY CITY, N. J, May 20— Attorneys for 18-year-old Gladys MacKnight and her boy friend

Donald Wightman, paved the way today for them to testify in their own defense that Glady's mother was hacked to death because she had threatened them with a butcher Knife. Cross-examination of state witnesses by Gladys’ counsel indicated a plea of self-defense would be relied upon to save the girl from the electric chair. She and 19-year-old Wightman are charged with the murder of Mrs. Helen MacKnight. A few hours after her mother was found slain, Gladys repeatedly

told police: “It's none of your business who killed my mother,” a police chief testified for the State.

Accused Wightman

The officer, Cornelius O'Neill of Bayonne, said that Miss Macknight on the night of the killing accused her boy friend, Donald Wightman. “Donald did it; my mother came at me with a knife and Donald struck her with the ax,” O'Neill quoted Miss MacKnight as saying during the ride from Jersey City, where she and Wightman had been picked up, to Bayonne. She also said, according to O'Neill: “I'll never forget the look on my mother’s face.” Prosecutor Daniel who had expected to complete the

Coup de Grace Killer Gets Life in Prison

a surprise verdict of guilty without capital punishment against Melvin Vidrine, 27-year-old slayer of Frozina Zizinat, his common-law wife. He was sentenced “to the rest of his life at hard labor.” Vidrine had argued his wife had shot herself accidentally and he

had fired a coup de grace, as a “gentleman,” to put her out of pain.
