“WOMAN CHASES MAN"

SCENE FROM NEW CIRCLE MOVIE

Laieit i Film Idea

Of Humor

| Comedy Has Travelled in| Circle and Old Idea | Is Here Again.

According to Hollywood's thoughtful, the motion picture is on the neo-custard pie era. Further, “Woman Chases Man,” which opens at Loew’s tomorrow, is cited as a striking example of this return to primitive and’ pugnacious comedy.

Like all history, the saga of film - humor has traveled in a circle. The early screen comedies really harked back to the Roman arena style of entertainment, since both were built on the basic element of primitive enjoyment—sadism. So the in-. fant movies took to pies, and for years audiences reveled in'the sight of their fellow man plucking custard from his eyebrows. In this same period was developed the fall, whereby most of the leading characters were thrown upon their anatomical posteriors, amid’ howls of delight. Gradually humor became a bit more sophisticated, and the “pathetic” era was upon us. Charlie Chaplin set the vogue of the woe-begone waif, and such players as Harry Langdon cleaned up in imitation. Then with the talkies came the “gag.” But wisecrackers didn’t go as well in. screen sound as on the vaudeville stage. The death rattle already was sounding in the throat of Hollywood's comic muse, when someone remembered the pie. Came the renaissance. - Of course they don’t really throw them much nowadays, but the principle is the same. Situations are built up carefully, but the poiat comes in berserk action, figurative pie-slinging, falls and general rough house. If you don’t believe it, think back to “It Happened One Night” or “Libeled Lady,” to mention only a couple. Probably it's no ‘violation of confidence to tell you that the climax of the forthcoming Loew's feature cccurs with the six principal characters situated in the branches of a large tree. One by one they tumble out until, by process of elimination, all the plot angles are untangled. It’s still the old principle of the fall. The six people doing the Tarzan among the branches are Miriam Hopkins, Joel McCrea, Tala Birell, Erik Rhodes, Ella Logan and Bro-

Some of these velveteen bodices are made suspender fashion, and in true Tyrolean style are brightly embroidered in tiny flower patterns, very charming in black velvet embroidered in pink and green, and worn over a soft blue silk frock. j On some of the cotton and silk dresses, smocking is done in gay colors, and, newer than this form of trimming, the cross-stitch, used effectively to form a border on sleeve edges and around the hem of the skirt. Little coats and jackets of monotone wool that are lined with quaint, flowered calico are new looking, and should find favor with both children and their mothers. A sample of this novelty is a bright navy blue coat lined with red calico patterned in minute yellow, the outer ecges of the coat being bound in matching red braid. Amusing silver buttons made like coins with a likeness of Napoleon decorate a brief, fitted jacket worn with a dark blue skirt, and, accordinv to Miss Wakeling, are considered by Shirley to be the highlight of

To Present War Satire

Federal Players to Open 'No More Peace’

Here Monday.

Napoleon starts all the trouble in “No More Peace,” Ernst Toller’s new satirical play which will be the Federal Players’ offering at Keith's for a week beginning Monday night.

The play’s introduction shows Napoleon, Socrates, St. Francis and other departed notables discussing mankind's predilection for armed conflict. Napoleon undertakes to prove his point, and selects the mythical country of Dunkelstein for his experiment. Dunkelstein is right in the midst of a peace celebration, but Napoleon turns it into a first-class war by a scheme said to be decidedly and hilariously effective. The new play is not a propaganda piece, but it is claimed to be a humorous satire which points out the folly of warfare.

Several Federal Theater companies throughout the country are to present the new work, which is in three acts and seven scenes. The

Indianapolis production will be marked by the initial appearance of three new players, Bruce Barnard, Betty Widmer and Henry Biedlinger, who have come to the local group from New York. Sponsors for the showing of “No

More Peace” at Keith's will include *
