With the Californians on the | pench Mr. Pate would be obliged to employ a group of earnest, but | that's-about-all,, young men whose chief equipment for international tennis is a pair of white flannels. a | pair of sneakers, and doting mothers | wno think they have forehands. And tennis farces don't draw much money. Of all sports custo- | mers tennis fans probably are the most knowing, and there is no use | in trying tc feed them lopsided | matches. They stay away from such | things in large and imposing numpers. For proof that the West Side | Tennis Club and the U. S. L. T. A.| do not want the customers to stay away from the battle with Australia, | one has only to tuprn to page 38 of the current New Yorker magazine and read the quarter-page advertisement. There, in very white, is an invitation to come out and follow the play by buying tickets ranging in price from $2.75 for daily singles, to 3 30 for a series box * of six. By playing, i! playing well, the Messrs. Budge and Mako will make tennis organizations thousands and] thousands of dollars this year.

Mechanic Tells How He Hopes to Help Bill

Cummings Win.

RANKIE DELROY intimated today that he and “Wild Bill” Cummings probably will hold hands so they can win the 500mile automobile race at Indianapolis Speedway May 31. Frankie, Cummings’ mechanic, said he learned how to hold hands with drivers several years ago. The strictly matter of fact intention is to massage the driver's hands to restore circulation and thus relieve the tension resulting from gripping the wheel. Holding hands is possible only on the straightaway, when the car is roaring along at top speed, Frankie said. ‘He will rub one of Cummings’ hands in the grandstand stretch, the other on the back stretch. Cummings will have to forego cne-arm driving on the curves, his mechanic added.
