Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jones, Kokomo, almost had forgotten that he had entered a picture in the nation-wide competition.

Gets News by Wire

He was about to begin a project at the school at 10:30 a. m. yesterday when someone handed him a telegram. He opened it and read it. His face went white and his legs wobbled. “Then I sat down,” he said. Donald Mattison, who heads the school and who won the same prize when he was a Yale student, said that Mr. Jones expected least of all with pictures entered, to win. The members of his class boosted Jones to their shoulders and carried him out of the room. He forgot to duck and has a bump on his head. This morning they gathered up some bright streamers and draped them around autos for a triumphant parade around the city.

Dance Authorized

Tonight, they are to have a dance in the lecture hall. Mr. Mattison gave permission this morning and you couldn't hear anything above the cheers for five minutes. This is the first time in several years the prize has come to the Middle West, the only time it ever: came to a student in an Indiana school, and the third time it has come to a Hoosier. The winner. has worked his way through school. He worked in a machine shop in Kokomo last sumHis father is a machinist: He took art in high school and today had a telegram of congratulations from his high sehool art teacher. He also had a telegram from the Kokomo Department Club asking him to let it be the first to sponsor a one-man show for him. He said he would. Shock Too Much

He lives in Indianapolis at 1217 N. Delaware St. with two roommates. They cook their own meals. They had no celebration last night, but instead Mr. Jones wrote letters until 9 and then went to bed. He said the opening of the telegram had been too much for him. : The winning picture is entitled “Carnival.” It shows a merry-go-round and a typical county fair crowd. Mr. Jones wandered about the State Fair to get his material. He also attended a couple of county fairs. He already has decided he will make a special study in the use of frescoes in Rome. He had intended to do that here.

Police today expressed the theory that the human hairs found in Fall Creek near Highland Place yesterday had come from a discarded mattress or automobile seat.
