Lightens Interest In Markets.
By United Press NEW YORK, May 15. — Stocks moved irregularly on the Stock Exchange in the short session today. A majority registered advances until just before the close when leaders slipped back. Bonds were mixed with rails higher. Grains and cotton
advanced.
London markets were closed for Whitsuntide and as a result there was little interest in American markets. Business news continued favor- . able, especially on steel operations, which were scheduled to rise next week in several important areas, notably Pittsburgh. The Street :lso was encouraged by remarks of Col. Leonard P. Ayres, Cleveland economist, who said both volume of business and total profits probably will be greater in the second quarter than in the first. Despite good steel news, steel shares moved in a narrow range. Railroad issues were higher although trading was. light. Non- , ferrous ‘metal issues were fractions to a point higher. [Fractional advances were: noted in oils. Farm issues improved. Mercantile and airplane issues were steady. The market community continued cautious. It was worried over prospect of higher margins. In addition, some British market difficulties were anticipated when London markets reopen Tuesday. It was said the worst phase of the recent fortnightly settlement in London was held up until after coronation ceremonies.

TEXTILE COLLAPSE HINTED By United Press WASHINGTON, May 15.—Francis J. Gorman, United Textile Workers of America president, had told a: House of Representatives committee today that the textile industry is headed for “a severe
slump withi nthe next three months, unless some measure of regulation
ahd control is quickly introduced.”
HOG TOP RISES T0 $11 T0 END REGORD WEEK
Local Packing Needs Spur Further Rise From Highs for Year.
The most sustained advance of the year today saw the top on hogs lifted to $11, a new peak since last September, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, U, S.
Department of Agriculture. The gain in the week measured 60 cents, all weights of barrows and gilts sharing in the upturn. Factors contributing to the rise were light receipts and an improved fresh pork market, the former probably more than the latter. Today’s market was 10 cents higher, local packer support coming into the market after being rather indifferent for a eriod. Shippers have been setting the pace for weeks, with much Eastern support attracted by the plentiful supply o good and choice grade offerings ere.
Sows Steady; Cattle Strong
Sows today were steady, selling upward to $10 and 25 to 40 cents higher than last week's close. Compared with last week's close, steers and heifers were fully 25 cents higher. Cows were steady to strong. Bulls were firm, and best steers brought $12.25. Top on heifers was $10.75. The top on sausage bulls was $7, but most sold from $6.75 down. Vealers were 50 cents lower, with a closing top of $9.50. Clipped lambs rose 50 cents in the week. Spring lambs were in too light supply to test prices. | Sheep were steady.

Corn Bought Against Wheat Sales, but Shorts End ~ Pressure.
By United Press | CHICAGO, May 15.—Prices worked gradually higher to a strong close on the Chicago Board of Trade today. Short covering continued in May - wheat, while persistent lack of rain
in certain sections of the Southwest induced buying of deferred futures, At the end wheat was 1 to 2% cents higher, May $1.2575; new om was up % to 1s cents, May $1303; old corn “was 2% to 3 cents higher, May $1.29%, and oats were unchanged to 1% cents higher, May 507: cents. The market was higher from the start. Back- -spreaders exerted pressure on the new crop months against purchases of corn. Winnipeg was firm at the opening, but wet weather reports brought out selling and prices reacted. Export business was cut down by the holiday at Liverpool. Corn was firm, Selling pressura wa notably absent, particularly in ay.
