FRIDAY M
EX-GRID PLAYER
WAS SHIFTY BUT
-LAWNABBED HIM
Man Held in G-Man Slaying Posed Successfully as. British Subject.
By ROBERT 8S. BROWN Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, May 14.—How a former Toledo football player, who turned from the gridiron to the underworld, used a dozen or more aliases, but failed to “beat the law” was revealed here by J. Edgar Hoover, chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. : On April 16, G-Man Wimberly W. Baker stalked two suspects, wanted for a New York bank robbery, into the lobby of the postoffice at Topeka, Kas. They resisted arrest and Mr. Baker was mortally shot. The suspects escaped. A few hours later the men were picked up in Plattsmouth, Iieb., by a small-town sheriff. One gave his name as Robert J. Suhay, the other as Alfred Power, a British subject.
It took the FBI only a short time to establish that Suhay was who he said he was, but nearly a month to prove that “Power” was Glen John Applegate, 33, a native of Temperance, Mich.
Once Escaped From Prison
Applegate then readily admitted his true name. He said that in 1930, under the name of Gerald Lewis, he was sentenced in New York to a 10year term in Sing Sing for robbery. He was transferred to Great Meadows Prison and escaped in 1931, but was recaptured two months later and his sentence prolonged.
Prior to his arrest, Applegate had associated in New York with a British: hoodlum named Alfred Power. The real Power had a passport and the two men had discussed the possibility of exchanging identities. Applegate had studied Power's English accent. After being ‘imprisoned, Applegate heard the Englishman had been killed in an underworld scrape and he conceived the idea of impersonating the dead man in order

'to escape further imprisonment in Philadelphia, where he was wanted for robbery. Accordingly, when he came up for parole late in 1936 he had perfected his impersonation of Power so well that when called before the parole authorities and immigration officials he convinced them that he was a British subject, in this country illegally.
Deported to London
So he was deported to London as Alfred Power. Less than a month later he had stolen the pay vouchers of an English seaman named McNally, and had shipped back to the United States on the Aquitatnid., In New York he jumped ship.
How he became associated wi Suhay, Applegate has refused f¢ reveal. But this information probably will be uncovered when the
two men stand trial in Kansas for the killing of G-Man Baker. ° The FBI said Applegate's aliases have included “Limey” Malley, Raymond Fidella, Lou Moore, Frank Lowry and Gerald Parker. : While going to high school in Toledo he was a football star. He later played professional football.
NEWCASTLE TRIAL OF LOCAL MAN SPEEDED
By United Press NEWCASTLE, May 14.—Completion of prosecution evidence in the trial of Joseph Nally, 36, Indianapolis, charged with the $5400 robbery of the Farmland Bank a year ago, was expected today in Henry Circuit Court.
ICE-CHOKED FLOOD PERILS FAIRBANKS
By United Press ' FAIRBANKS, Alaska, May 14.— Trappers, traders and planters rushed to the river today to help build barricades against ice-choked flood waters that threatened the town. Women and children were moved to camps on higher ground. Waters from the Tanana and Chena Rivers, which converge a few
miles above the town, were sweeping through the streets. Three 'sections of the Alaska Railroad Co.’s tracks were washed out and watchmen halted the mail and passenger train from Seward. Most communi-
cation lines were down.
