Improved Turns and Lifting of Limitations on Gasoline Cited as Chief Factors in Forecasts of Most Exciting Competition in History of Event.

Speedway fans will probably see the fastest race in the history of . the track this year—and possibly. one of the most fateful. With qualifying tests, expected to raise average speed marks to as high as 126 miles per hour, oldsters about the track, including drivers and their mechanics, talk of accidents this year. The reasons are plain enough to warrant a prediction that the qualifying period and the anniversary grind on May 31, may this year be the scene of misfortune for some, they say. The reasons advanced are that the gasoline limitation, which forced caution in speed last year, has been eliminated. All cars may be equipped with superchargers and the new®

One Casualty Last Year

Old-timers say that never before has there been such a definite assurance that the forthcoming race will be one of the most hazardous in history. A year ago at this time, one driver said, drivers and officials were predicting the opposite. It was believed that the widening of the turns would be a great factor in making for, a safe race last year. This and the gas limitation proved their predictions true. Al Miller was the only casualty. He spun around on the straight-away in front of the Pagoda and received a broken hip. Pete De Paolo, 1925 champion, said today he feared many of the new rivers, who have come fresh from the midget car arenas and dirt tracks, would ‘‘overdrive” this year.
