Baseball Diamonds, Tennis Courts and Pools Await Youths.

Play time for Indianapolis’ thousands of children will officially begin June 15, Wallie Middlesworth, City Recreation Director, announced today.

On that day the city’s 39 playgrounds and 10 wading pools will open for two months. :

Other city recreation facilities, to open on that day, include 85 tennis courts, 90 horseshoe courts, 26 soft ball diamonds and 26 baseball diamonds.

Mr. Middlesworth said that 85 tennis courts and all horseshoe courts are now in shape. Softball diamonds ready for use number 18, while 21 of the hardball lots can be used now.

Pools Also Open June 15

Three new wading pools have been added to the seven used last summer. They are located at Walnut and Spring Sts, Bethel and Minnesota Sts. and in George Washington Park. An ordinance appropriating $6000 for the construction of ‘10 additional wading pools was passed at the last City Council session. Mr. Sallee said Indianapolis ranks ahead of many cities in the per capita amount of park and playground area.

Other Progress Noted

Other progress reported since last summer jincludes a salary increase of $10 a month for recreational instructors. A three-day institute for training of recreational supervisors is to be held soon. From the institute enrollment 72 matrons, men and women instructors are to be chosen. : Mr. Sallee said that both he and . Park Board members believe Indianapolis is equipped with adequate play area. However, petitions are pending before the Park Board requesting enlargement at Haughville and construction of a wading pool and playground on E. 21st St., east of Sherman Drive. Mr. Sallee said that no sites for the proposed 10 additional wading pools would be selected until action on the appropriation ordinance by the State Tax Board.

State and City officials are to give addresses of welcome and delegates are to be registered by a committee under the direction of George Pfeilschifter. Louis P. Fahrbach is chairman of the reception and guest committee. First activity of the conclave is set for Friday night, when Robert J. Heuslein, Indianapolis, will direct a get-together party.

World’s Exposition

Indianapolis delegates are to stage a miniature “world’s exposition” of their printing production. Visiting delegates will be given an opportunity to inspect various Indianapolis plants Saturday morning while women visitors are to be taken on a tour of the Indiana World War Memorial. Special busses will take craftsmen and their wives to the Speedway to witness trial runs Saturday afternoon. The convention will close with a dinner-dance in the Riley Room of the Claypool Hotel Saturday at 7 p. m.
