Brings Selective Buying. |

By United Press | NEW YORK, May 12.—The lightest trading of the year developed on the stock market today despite .selective buying in industrial and railroad shares. All Canadian and British markets were closed for the coronation, resulting in a drying up of almost all foreign business. Commodity markets also were extremely quiet but prices showed firmness after early irregularity. Bond trading was quiet but second grade rails showed strength. Investment ‘buying reportedly was developing in this division. Rail issues led the early advance on the stock market, Atchison again

HOG BIDS JUMP 10 T0 25 CENTS: TOP HITS $10.75

Advance Breaks All Records Since Jan. 15 and Nears 1937 Peak Mark.

Top ‘of hogs here skyrocketed to $10.75 today, within 10 cents of the peak since last September and the highest since Jan. 15, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Econocmics, U. S. Department of Agriculture. it was the light receipts locally that stimulated the advance, which measured 25 cents on weights above 160 pounds and 10 cents on light lights and pigs. Combined offerings at 11 markets, however, were substantially below a week ago and the general swing was toward higher

{levels despite a tint of widespread

weakness at yesterday’s close. Sows soared 15 to 25 cents, to rising to $10. Cattle Rise Forced The country again denied the market sufficient cattle to . permit buyers to effect the reduction in beef costs they have been seeking this week. Instead marketings were curtailed to ‘such an extent that killers were forced to pay 15 to 25 cent higher prices throughout the

Aimless Drift Lower Yields To Rapid Decline in Last Hour.

By United Press CHICAGO, May 12.—General dullness prevailed in Chicago grain pits today until the final hour. Prices drifted lower after an easier opening until toward the end of the session, losses increased with a sudden rapidity and May corn plunged downward. . A rally set in immediately howe ever. At the end wheat was off % to up 15 cent, May $1.2215; new corn was %4 to 1% cents lower, May $1.25%; old corn was off 2 to 27% cents, May $1.23'%z; and oats were % to 15, cent lower, May 45'2 cents. Showers in the Southwest, North=west and sections of the Canadian "West constituted about the only market influence with the excep=tion of some liquidation in. May and this brought out scattered selling of new crop months in the eat pit. Buenos Aires opened steady while Liverpool and Winnipeg were shut

ss down in observation of the corona-

pacing with more than 2 points gain, An optimistic report by the maga- _ zine Iron Age brought buying into steel shares which at one time carried U. S. Steel 1% higher. U. S. Steel preferred dropped to a new vy the year at 133, off 2'4.

A house with cash grain connections purchased July and sold September at a difference of 9 cents with a local leader completing. the transaction. There was a great deal of changing over, ‘ Country offerings to arrive were slight with 8000 bushels of corn booked by receivers. Shippers reported sales ‘of 3000 be@ishels while receipts were estimated at-25 cars. Rains throughout the corn belt were indicated by the weather map. Buenos Aires was unchanged at the opening.

steer and heifer list. Meager supplies of cows recovered the weakness permeating the class earlier in the week and bulls held fully steady. _ With curtailed Eastern outlet due to interrupted Kosher killing until 2 | next Tuesday, salesmen were un- | successful in raising vealer values on reduced supplies and levels here on most offerings continued in the unfavorable position with nearby centers. Prices were mostly steady to 50 cents lower, only a few choice vealers making $9.50.
