Puts Champs Back in the
First Division; Pirates Increase Lead.
"By GEORGE KIRKSEY United Press Staff Correspondent
NEW YORK, May 11.— The New York Yankees’ retreat was at an end today and the man who stopped the panicky flight came close to the hall of fame.
Monte Marcellus Pearson, 28-year-old right-handed pitcher, in breaking the Yanks’ four-game losing streak—longest since 1935—narrowly missed a no-hit, no-run game. He allowed one single. Larry Rosenthal, "White Sox outfielder, was the second man up in the first inning and he singled to right. After that the White Sox got only two men on bases, both on passes, and one of them was nullified by a double play. In one stretch Pearson set down 16 men in order. He fanned four men. Pearson - was the Yanks’ second-
best pitcher last year, winning .
games, but this season he promises to be their No. 1 moundsman. He has won his first three games. The Yankees’ 7-0 victory enabled the world champions to move back into the first division, tying with Detroit for third place. Joe Dimaggio hit two homers and Selkirk one. Pittsburgh increased its National League lead to two and one-haif games by a 4-1 victory over the Boston Bees. Bill Swift held the Bees to eight scattered hits. The Pirates won the game in the first inning, scoring three runs off Lou Fette. Jurges Out of Action Clyde Shoun, rookie southpaw, halted the Cubs’ three-game losing streak by pitching Chicago to a 4-3 victory over the New York Giants. He kept the Giants’ nine hits scattered and struck out four. Another Cub plaver joined the casualty list when Shortstop Jurges came up with a “stiff wrist, making six Chicago regulars out of the game. Hal Schumacher lost his third straight start. Van Mungo set the Cardinals gown with four hits as Brooklyn beat St. Louis, 8-2. He fanned six and walked three, scoring his fourth victory. The Cardinal defense again fell apart, with Gutteridge, Bordagaray, Brown and Ogrodowski making errors.
The Phillies pounded out a 10-3 |
victory over Cincinnati while Bucky Walters held the Reds to four hits. Whithey hit a homer and Browne,
Johnny Moore and Hershel Martin |,
hit doubles. : A's Continue Streak The Philadelphia Athletics kept up their torrid pace by winning from Detroit, 9-5. Luther Thomas went the route for the A’s, allowing only eight hits. The A’s knocked out Tommy Bridges, and continued their attack on Clyde Hatter. Chubby Dean drove in four runs with three singles. Cleveland beat the Boston Red Sox, 6-5, in 11 innings and remained tied with the A’s for the lead. Manager Cronin’s wild throw let Cleveland score the winning run. The ians made 17 hits off five Red Sox pitchers. The St. Louis Browns won from Washington, 6-3, behind the fivehit pitching of Rookie Julio Bon- - etti, who blanked the Senators until the ninth. Beau Bell made three of the Browns’ nine hits.
Yesterday's Heroes—Rip Collins, Chicago first baseman, .who hit a homer with Frey on base to give the Cubs a 4-3 victory over the Giants, and Monte Pearson, Yankee pitcher, who blanked the White Sox, 7-0, holding them toon one hit.

3-Day Stand At St. Paul
Locals Downhearted Despite Halting Losing Streak in Millers’ Finale.
Times Special ST. PAUL, May 11.—With the new race less than a month old, the Indianapolis Indians, in seventh place, are eight games behind the league-leading Milwaukee Brewers. The Redskins lost six in a row pefore checking the toboggan slide in Minneapolis yesterday and the crestfallen Tribesters moved into St. Paul today to open. a 3-game series with the Apostles at Lexington Park. The Saints are another disappointed outfit and are in the eight hole, less than one-half game back of the Hoosiers. Gabby Street's pastimers were heralded as powerful contenders for the pennant before the campaign got under way, but like the Indians, they seem to lack balance and consistency. The Apostles finished second last year, and the Indians fourth, and in the post-season playoff between the clubs Indianapolis won four out of five : Wade Killefer’'s Redskins will leave for home Thursday night, travel on Friday and open the night
Saturday against Milwaukee.
Logan Finally Checks Millers
Times Special MINNEAPOLIS, May 11.—Striking out seven, three in one inning, Lefty Bob- Logan of the Indians subdued the Mauling Millers in the series finale at Nicollet Park yesterday and the Indians salvaged one game out of three, 2 to 1. The battle went into the ninth stanza with the score deadlocked, 1 and 1, when Danny Taylor blasted a home run over the left field fence as first up in the last round. It was the game-winning punch and the Millers were turned back .in one, two, three order in their half. John Peéacock, the Millers’ catcher, touched Logan for a roundtripper in the third inning and from then on in the Millers were blanked. Bean Also in Form Hits were eight apiece and it was a mound struggle seldom seen in the bandbox park. Belve Bean, right-hander went the round for the home nine and held Logan to even terms until the ninth. Shanty Hogan’s first hit as an Indian led off the Tribe fifth, but George Archie grounded into a double play, one of three executed by the Millers. Parker singled and Logan was safe on Kress’ fumble. Oscar Eckhardt connected for his second hit of the day and it scored Parker with the important tieing marker. Logan pitched out of a hole in | the Millers’ fifth when, with runners on second and third and one ! out, he fanned Bean and forced Spence to tap out to the infield. Peacock’s homer was registered in the third as first up. It was this in- | ning in which Logan fanned three in a row, Bean, Spence and Cooke.

racing notables to pick out at the track. : They wouldn't let Joe drive last year at the Indianapolis track because of lack of experience. For several years, he said, his outboard motorboat racing and his auto racing overlapped. He finally had to give up the boats. He still holds records in classes A, B, C, D, in outboards. At one time he won the title of Wew England champion. Of the coming race he said: “Other races come and go but the Indianapolis race is still the one all the boys wait for. The reason for this is that the champion of the local track still carries more prestige than any other winner.” Joe expects his wife here Saturday to watch him qualify. After completing his driving test Charles Merz, track steward, told Joe “Now you can drive as fast as you want to Joc.” Joe replied, “No Charley, not as fast as I want to, but only as fast aslcan.”.
