STATIC SPARKS HINTED CAUSE OF LEPPELIN BLAST

‘Rosendahl Tells Board How : :

He Saw Hindenburg

Burst in Flames.

By United Press NAVAL AIR STATION, LAKE-

HURST, May 10.—Comn. Charles :

E. Rosendahl, dean of American aircraft experts. recited today in a low, tense voice the first official version of the dirigible Hindenburg disaster without being able to state the cause of fire that destroyed the giant ship before his eyes. Comm. Rosendahl brought out that dirigibles accumulate statie in their hulls and that the Hindenburg had been in the vicinity of thunderstorms as she came in Thursday night for the landing at the end of 4he season’s first voyage from Germany with! 97 persons aboard. While cated it was not beyond possibility that static sparks touched off the fire in which 35! persons died, he testified that this was unlikely.

cver the whole tragic story. He described the dirigible as. she poked her way out of a sullen sky, the quick burst of yellowish flame from her topside, the flare of light as she burstiablaze and sank to the wet earth like a torch, with screaming passengers leaping from her cabins. \

Comm. Rosendahl said he had!

seen nothing which could tell him the cause of the fire. The ship was landing normally, he said. “There was first a burst of flame

aft and on top lof the ship.” he said. |

happening was not the cause,” he |

pointed out to reporters later, “I Just didn't say.” He told how the Hindenburg threw out her starbdéard and port ropes,

officers,” Comm. Rosendahl said. “About four, minutes after the trail ropes had been dropped there was a small burst of flame on the afterpart of the ship on the top. “My feeling was at once that that spelled the doom of the ship. i“I saw practically the whole stern. Then the fire spread progressively forward. “There were! mild explosions. In my opinion, the incident was primarily the burning of the hydrogen. The possibility of sabotage virtually has been abandoned.
