U.S. STEEL BREAKS UNDER PAR TO LEAD, QUIET STOCK SLIDE
Railroad Shares Off Sharply; Support Lacking.
By United Press ~ NEW YORK, May 10.— Steel and railroad shares led!
a quiet decline on the stock |
exchange today.
United States Steel common broke | below 100 for a loss of more than |
4 points. Other steels were down 1 to 3. Losses in railroad stocks ranged to more than 3 points in Atchison. . New York Central was down more, than 3. Losses of a point or mor were made by Pennsylvania,,Chesa- " peake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio. | Southern Pacific, Southern Railway, Union Pacific and Great Norther: Coppers, amusements, building shares, nonferrous metals, motors. utilities, chemicals, and rail equip- - ments joined the decline,” Some special issues had losses of more than 5. Lack of support rather than weight of offerings brought the decline, Many traders were out of the market since their accounts were frozen in the recent decline. Professionals did little. A report that a group of bankers is cooperating with President Roosevelt in his move to keep pr ices from running away and were selling their holdings in heavy goods industries brought pressure on industrial shares.

WEEK-END RAIN LOWERS WHEAT IN CHICAGO PIT
Traders Cautiously Awaiting Government Crop Report This Afternoon.
By United Press
slumped on the Chicago Board of Trade today as further liquidation
CHICAGO, May 10.—Grain prices |
of May contracts was in evidence and rain was reported in Texas and Oklahoma over the week-end. At the end wheat was % to 7% cent lower. May $125%:; new corn was off 3% fo 2% cents, May $1.30%; old corn was 2% to 27% cents lower, May $1.29'%, and oats were unchanged to 9% cent off, May 46% cents. Momentary support was given to the market at mid-session with the issuance of a bullish report on Oklahoma : crop conditions. Liverpool closed easier, forcing prices down here. Poor demand for cash wheat there counteracted favorable weekly statistics. Winnipeg observed a holiday. Mills were inclined to restrict their purchases of wheat, awaiting the expiration of May contracts. Later in the session, trade was obviously affected by curiosity about the Government crop report scheduled for later in the day. Corn was weak from the start. Good weather for planting brought out selling by locals while cash corn, off 3 to 4 cents, took its toll Buenos Aires opened unchanged to lower while Rotterdam closed easy.

LIVELY BIDDING RAISES PORKER PRICES 5 CENTS
Sows Abandon Lagging Tendency; Vealers Break [to $9.
An upswing in [fresh pork prices at Eastern consuming centers that in extreme ranged as much as $1.50 over last Friday Sia dain demand
for hogs today and a fairly liberal supply cleared readily at steady to 5 cents higher prices. The advance ‘was on weights above 160 pounds, pushing the top level to $10.45. Sows gained 15 to 25 cents under broad support by local interests. Faced with religious holidays later in the week when there will be no killing at some plants for two days, buyers were able to dictate terms today and vealer prices tumbled sharply. After a | deadlocked trade for some little time the market became established mostly $1 lower

than last Friday, pulling the top to
9. . A top of $11.40 went to a load of around (1000-lb. steers, with a few loads within the 1000-1100-pound weight range from $10.50 to $10.85, Bulk of the steers and yearlings, however, cleared from $8.50 to $10. A small lot of 700-lb. heifers was sufficiently qualitied to reach $10.75, most offerings from $8.75 to $10. A few sausage bulls touched $7, but -the practical top was $6.75. Aside from two loads of choice clipped fed Wetsern lambs scaling 88 pounds at $10.25, 25 cents lower than last week's close, there was little of fered in other classes to test the market.
