Loew’ s Aid Puts Bets On Actress

All-Color Film to. Open At Local Theater On Friday.

Loew’s manager, L. Ward Farrar, wants it understood that with greatest optimism “he will turn his theater over for a week beginning Friday - to Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, who are to be seen in Selznick International's Star Is Born.”

Mr. Farrar also hints he will not be suprprised if the picture will remain longet than just one week, but that, of course, is something picture-goers will determine themselves. It’s a fact, though, that the film has been hailed wherever shown as the rebirth of a famous star—Miss Gaynor—and that she herself feels the film has given and will give patrons a new conception of her talents. Long before the release date was set, Selznick International announced this production would "be its most pretentious offering of the year, combining as it. does technicolor photography with a cast that includes Adolphe Menjou, May Robson, Andy" Devine and Peggy Wood. Story of Hollywood

“A Star Is Born” is the story of Hollywood. That alone makes it an unusual picture, for the film producers are accustomed to glorifying everything from Tibetan lamaseries to. the night club atop Radio City, neglecting story material about their own people. As the title implies, the movie is the story of an extra who becomes a great star. Although Dorothy Parker and Alan Campbell, who wrote the story and dialog, may not know it, the film really is the story of Miss Gaynor’s movie career, plus, of course, 1omantic embellishments. A little more than 10 years ago, Miss Gaynor was one of thousands in Hollywood—a wistful extra hop"ing for a break. She got it when Fox Films needed a wistful girl for a bit part in “The - Johnstown Flood.” Her performance won her a contract, but no important roles. She played minor characters in “Shamrock Handicap,” “The Midnizht Kiss” and finally “The Return of Peter Grimm.” Because she ‘smiled and cried simultaneously, the movié men noticed her in “The Return of Peter Grimm” and decided to give her a ‘better part. You remember the picture, it you went to movies in 1927, for a star was born in “Seventh Heaven.” Since then Miss Gaynor has made many pictures, many of them good, some not so good. Romance Is Involved

Miss Gaynor readily says her future depends entirely upon public reception of the picture, which is the story of an| extra who meets a famous star—Mr. March, and through his influence is given the chance which makes her famous. They marry, and as her popularity ascends,- his descends. The story then becomes that of two famous people seeking happiness despite professional jealousy. Though the production is filmed entirely in | technicolor and is Director William Wellman’s first color picture, it was completed five weeks under schedule. That seems tc be something of a miracle in Hollywood, where directors are accustomed to running over both schedules and budgets.

The color is said to be an integral part of the film.” Probably so, for Director Wellman insists technicolor pictures can be filmed, as quickly and with as little trouble as the ordinary black and white.

Skate Star's Father Dead

Henie's Parent.

By United Press HOLLYWOOD, May 10.—The body of Wilhelm Henie, 65, jovial father of the skating film star, Sonja Henie, who died last night, probably will be taken to Norway for burial. Henie guided his pretty blond daughter to success as the world’s greatest skater and came to Hollywood last October with his wife to be near her. He left a large wholesale and fur establishment at Oslo in charge of a son, Leif. He died in the Wilshire Hospital last night of a blood clot in the lung following an abdominal operation. At his bedside were his wife, Selma, daughter, Sonja, and Tyrone Power, screen star who is Sonja's constant companion. :

methods I have always found practical.” Perhaps Mr. Wellman’s system is best, for those who have seen the picture insist it is beautiful without being conspiciously so. You doubtless remember his “So Big,” “Public Enemy,” “Legion of the Condemned” and “Wings.” “A Star Is Born” comes to Loew's Friday, following this week's double bill which includes Robert Montgomery and Rosalind Russell in “Night Must Fall” and Patsy Kelly in a musical, “Nobody’s Baby.”

Frozen North Locale for Picture Playing at Uptown.

-

A “Sequoia” of the northland is at the Uptown this week under the title “Tundra.” The picture was made in northern Alaska, within the Arctic Circle, and takes its name from the region it depicts. “Tundra” is more than a nature picture, for there is a semblance of a story which connects the scenes, but the pictures -of Alaskan wild life that are most interesting. The youngsters, particularly, will enjoy the camera record of bears at play, and many closeups of otter, beaver, deer, white fox, musk ox, seal, “snowshoe” rabbits and other wild life: of the frozen north. According to the distributor, Bur-roughs-Tarzan Pictures, “Tundra” was filmed almost entirely in northern Alaska, and only a few of the indoor scenes—which are unimportant—were made in Hollywood. Native Eskimos were used, even in the Hollywood-filmed portions. Doctor Is Stranded To give their animal and Alaskan landscape pictures human interest, the producers contrived to have a flying doctor, en route to an isolated Eskimo village with serum,

plane burns, ahd the doctor, with three cigarets, a package of wet matches, a pencil, notebook and cigaret lighter, is alone on the tundra. He is chased by polar sbears and takes refuge in a cave until a black bear and her cubs run him out. The mother bear is lost in a snow slide and the doctor “adopts” the cubs. With them he starts back to civilization. There is no food except game and fish. Life becomes a survival of the fittest, and once one of the bear cubs nearly becomes a meal, but the doctor loses heart and can’t kill it. : Snow Slides Shown Although “Tundra” has many interesting animal pictures, these are surpassed by scenes of ice and snow slides when thawing weakens the frozen masses and they slip into rivers. The cast is unimportant, with exception of Del Cambre, who is the flying doctor. Most of the conversation is with the bear cubs, and the cubs are good little comedians. “Tundra” is a highly desirable picture for children and for anyone who likes outdoor life. (By R. ™
