IT IS not very hard for any person whq receives a large “fan” mail to do this. That part of fan mail that consists of sex and love letters is written by people who feel they are thwarted and frustrated in life. Lonely men and women of all ages write them because something the writer has said, or the voice or manners of the radio or screen star gives them the feeling, “Here at last is a person who understands me—one to whom I can pour out ny innermost feelings”—and they 0.

Mother’s Day salutes are now in vogue, as are tributes to National Music Week, on' the bigger musical and variety shows. NBCWLW’s “Show Boat” honors both | tonight, with Thomas Thomas, the new Metropolitan Opera singer who was heard here during the Music Clubs’_ convention, singing the familiar ballad, “Mother o’ Mine.” Lanny Ross has selected one of the oldest known songs in the English language, “Summer Is I-Cumen In,” and he also will be heard in duet with Nadine Conner, soprano. singing “Sweethearts” from “Maytime.” \ » # 5 “Shawl Boat” plans“ after Lanny departs ‘still are vague. Charles Winninger rejoins the program after it moves West in June, and Thomas Thomas, its newest addition, will stay. ‘But the rest of the cast, including Al ‘Goodman's orchestra, stays behind in New York or joins other shows elsewhere. ¢ Since Lanny's announcement he was leaving the program which

in and rumor links him in a costarring part with Gertrude Lawrence, the English-actress who came to New York to costar with Noel Coward in his Broadway cycle, “Tonight at 8:30.” Miss Lawrence has been a “Show Boat” visitor, so it would not be surprising if they are united in a forthcoming series. Mr. Ross, presumably, will broadcast from Hollywood after leaving “Show Boat,” since he has a film

: 8 .0n 8 Don’t forget Rudy Vallee's show tonight—NBC-WIRE at 8 o'clock— in which Rudy will be heard, with his all-English program, from the studios of the British Broadcasting Co, The program is the first regular sponsored series to be originated in London. Rudy also will broadcast from England next week, then will return to New York to resume the “Varietly Hour” from Radio City. : ‘ When he returns, Edgar Bergen and his. celebrated “Charlie McCarthy” will have departed from New York, and will be in Hollywood, where Sunday night he and a 12-cylinder cast premiere a new NBC show. With Don Ameche as master of ceremdnies and Werner Janssen directing the ' orchestra, the new offering replaces NBC--WIRE's “Do You Want to Be an Actor?” series. The first guest star will be Ann Harding, who was married to Mr. Janssen in England prior to their recent, return to this country.’ " 2 Successful afternoon shows have a-way of finding their way inte evening hours when established programs leave the air for a summer or permanently. Last week “America’s ' Town Meeting” discontinued discussions until next fall, and at 7:30 o'clock tonight, over NBC-WIRE, you may hear the “Spelling Bee” which has attracted many Saturday afternoon listeners. : Tonight's contestants will be Wellesley College women and Massachusetts Institute of Technology men. Paul Wing is to be spelling master. When he inaugurated his bees, they were broadcast only in home cities of rival teams: Now they are carried by the coast-to-coast chain, and beginning tonight will occupy an excellent evening hour.

HE Boston Symphony Orchestra’s “pop” concerts, as much
a Boston tradition as beans or cod,
open another season over NBC with a broadcast at 6:30 p. m. today. Arthur Fiedler, who has directed the “pops” since NBC first broadcast them in 1931, will conduct.
The “pop” concerts were founded. in 1881 by the late Henry Lee Higginson as a supplement to the Boston Symphony Orchestra's regular season. The concerts were primarily for amusement of musicians themselves. Stiff rows of seats in the old Boston Music Hall were replaced with small tables and chairs, so that listeners might enjoy refreshments with their Strauss or Mozark. The custom still prevails, and the *pop” concerts have the atmosphere of a Vienna outdoor restaurant or Paris sidewalk cafe. .
