CHICAGO WHEAT | HIGHER AS CORN SHOWS DECLINE
Strength i in o Fordign Markets ~ Overcomes Beneficial Rain Reports.
By United Press CHICAGO, May 1.—Overriding an early tip, wheat prices staged a moderate rally on the Chicago Board of Trade today and closed around 1. cent higher. Buying power was attracted by light offerings and commission houses were prominent, led by Eastern and Southwestern interests.
At the close wheat was % to 3 cent higher, May $1.32%; new corn was 11% to 2!5 ‘cents lower, May $1.30%4;: old corn was 112 cents lower, May $1.28%2, and oats were unchanged to i cent lower, May 50's cents. Favorable weather reports caused scattered selling shortly "after the opening. Beneficial rains were reported in the winter wheat belt but failed to touch the Southwestern dust bowl. The influence of foreign markets was sqon felt. Liverpool was 1%; to 2 pence higher at the close, a partial reflection of the firmness in North American markets yesterday. May contract deliveries mounted to 350,000 bushels, creating selling on the initial bulge. ; Scattered selling by commission houses reduced fractional advances in corn and prices were generally lower at the close. A cargo of 90,000 bushels of Argentine corn made its appearance on. the market last night. Shipping sales were 70,000 bushels. - Receipts were 49 cars, accordirtg to estimates. There was only a light trade in oats and although the market was firm early, the advances failed to hold. Most of the selling was local. Soy beans were feotureless.
