. WASHINGTON, April 30.—Another John Lewis, who is likewise a leader of the United Mine Workers and an Iowan, and whose eyebrows jut fiercely, has come to town. : He is John C. Lewis, heretofore one of John L.s ablest lieutenants and president of the Iowa Federation of Labor, who has been appointed by President Roosevelt to the new seven-man Coal Commission set up by the 1937 Guffey Act. He is one of the two labor men on this tripartisan bcard, on which management and the 9ublic are also represented. The seva1 get $10,000 a year each. He is an expert in the economics of coal as well as in unionizing. He is known to friends in the miners union as “Shady” Lewis, but they will tell you this affectionate nickname is no reflection on his character or methods of operation. He was born in Wales, whereas John L. is a native of Iowa, but otherwise the parallel is remarkable.

Both Miners’ Sons

Bgth are sons of miners. Both came up through the U. M. W. to leadership. Both have been active in politics, John C. recently having been legislative representative of the Towa federation as well as its president. Both are short and heavily built men. Both are usually quietspoken, and both wear big widebrimmed hats.

“John C. has been president of the Iowa Federation since 1921, but the current A. F. of L. “purge” of C. I. O. elements in the state federations would make his expulsion from that job almost certain. He followed the U. M. W. into the C. I. O. movement, and was one of the delegates at the last A. F. of L. convention who voted against the old-line leadership. (He attended the convention as a delegate of the State Federation, not as a ‘member of the suspended miners’ union.) He has been active in negotiating and advisory capacities for his union, and has often been named Iowa's labor representative in. industrial conferences.
