Radio Stars _ Are Cast In New Picture

‘New Faces' Is an Apt Title; Most Players Are

Screen Novices.

By | PAUL HARRISON HOLLYWOOD, April 28.— (NEA)—There are a lot of old voices in “New Faces.” Old, familiar voices, I mean. RKO has solved the problem of getting big names into a picture about movie novices by raiding radio. Most of them are screen novices, too, except for Joe Penner and Parkyakarkus. And even they are best known on the air. Harriet Hilliard played in “Follow the Fleet,”

. but in no such leading feminine

role as she has now. And Milton Berie—well, in 1934 he made a short called “Poppin’ the Cork” for the company that is whimsically known as “Educationat.” Mr. Berle is willing to forget all about that little incident if your are. It’s a Tough ‘Racket

When he came to Hollywood this time, he was taken aside by Jack Oakie, who spoke as follows: “Milton, you are a great fellow on the air and you have been doing all

right on Broadway revue stages, i

this movie rackey is the toughes thing yet. “You are going into a picture with the two most expert scene stealers in town. I mean Penner and Parkyvakarkus. You may not notice it at the time, but when you see the finished picture you will find that while you are speaking in a scene ‘they will be hogging the camera or doing extra little pieces of business to attract the audience's attention to them. I just thought I'd warn you.” All this was intended -as a joke, | because the two funnymen are no | .more addicted to scene-stealing than any other comedians in ‘Hollywood, including Oakie himself, and

"much less than Hugh Herbert.

In Self-Defense

But the joke worked. Berle went in there to fight for his professional honor. He mugged, with gestures. He walked around making faces while Penner and Parky ‘were speaking, He waved his arms. He moved in front of them. He aid this for three days. It was a very trying time for everybody, and well might have been the end of Berle’s screen career except that somebody learnd the reason for his weird behavior. So they shot the secnes over again, and at this writing things are going along fairly smoothly. What Berle doesn’t know about scene stealing: he knows about joke lifting. For years on Broadway he was notorious as a purloiner of other people’s gags, “and: occasionally made little quips about his acquistive talents, such as, “When I turn over a new/leaf, it'll be a page | in Joe Miller's Joke book.” This Held Him On the “New| Faces” set, he endured a long gerutiny from ParkyaKarkus and finally asked: “What are you looking at?” t “At every agtor in the country,” replied the cofnedian. Penner has a scene in which he ,oulls many yards of silk flags, all etied together, from his sleeve. This simple piece pf magic is faked by having a property man squat on the floor beside Penner, out of camera range, and feed the flags under his cod. It went allyright for a couple of rehearsals, then Parky sent over to the commissary for a dead fish. The fish secretly was:tied to the end of the last flag. The camera began to grind, and Penner assumed his most fatuous smirk as the flag frick progressed. His expression when the fish appeared should make cinematic history. Efficiency Plus One more item from that set, though it has nothing to do with the picture. Parky told me that he visited a friend at an independent studio the other evening, and was invited to go to the projection room to view the day’s rushes. On the
