‘Internes Can't Take Money’ Title Is Declared Misleading.

“Internes Can't Take Money,” Paramount's Barbara Stanwyck-Joel McCrea opus currently at the Circle, isn't exactly what the title implies. Money hasn’t much to do with it, for the movie is romance almost from beginning

to end. There is one time when our hero turns thumbs down on hard cash, but that is incidental to the plot, which concerns a young doctor and a patient in trouble. Miss Stanwyck is the patient, Mr. McCrea the interne in this somber, melodramatic tale of the underworld. When Janet Haley (Miss Stanwyck) faints from hunger in Dr. Kildare's clinic, the doctor becomes interested in her. His interest quickens when she helps him with an emergency operation in a saloon, but she refuses to reveal her reason for being there. He hunts out her room, and explains he has $1000 in his pocket which he can’t keep because it was given him by a gangster on whom he performed the “saloon-set” operation. “Internes can't take money,” he explains.

Attempts to Steal Money

Janet tries to steal the money, but fails. She needs it badly to bribe information about her baby from another gangster. Penniless and job lost, she agrees to associate with the gangster for information about her baby, whose father was killed in a bank holdup. The interne finds out the truth. With aid of his underworld friends,

Janet and the gangster are rounded up. The gangster is shot, and when threatened to be left without medical care, he reveals the child's whereabouts. Janet and Dr. Kildare find the youngster. On such a slim plot there is much forthright action and convincing performances by both Miss Stanwyck and Mr. McCrea. The results are altogether agreeable if you don’t expect too much, although Alfred Santell’s direction leaves much to be desired. The supporting cast is unimportant and includes Lloyd Nolan, Stanley Ridges, Gaylord Pendleton, Lee Bowman and Harry Macollum. The circle’s second picture is “youre in the Army Now” a Gaumont- British comedy that’s feeble despite a competent cast that includes pretty Wallace Ford and playeis.—(By R. N.)

Robert Barrat Stands Out For Performance As Villain.

With an astute eye to headlines and box office, Warner Bros. present in ‘Mountain Justice” their third recent picture suggested by melodramatic contemporary life. “Black Legion” began the cycle, dealing as the name implies with Detroit’s terrorism. Then came : Bette Davis’ “Marked Woman,” which

narrated the career and downfall of a vice Racketeer—after the trial of Charles Luciano and his New York ring. “Mountain Justice,” now at the Lyric, is a serious story of a hillbilly girl who tries to take medical science to her fanatical kinsmen, but is balked by a stubborn father and ignorant neighbors. Throughout the melodramatic struggle and the somewhat too noble love angle. Director Michael Curtiz succeeds in imparting a feeling his story is very real. The spectator is convinced that against just such odds as faced Ruth Harkins (Josephine Hutchinson) is social betterment taken into our mountain regions.

Father's Role Well Played

Ruth Harkins’ strongest opposition is her father, Jeff Harkins, played with singular conviction by! Robert Barrat. Mr. Barrat makes his character the most completely despicable villain the screen has produced in a long time. Thus does Director Curtiz justify his death by his daughter’s hand. Miss Harkins 1s defended by a young lawyer once sent to the mountain country to seek her father’s conviction on a murder charge: A sympathetic jury, well aware of his guilt, gives him a brief sentence. But the trial is nct futile, for it introduces the lawyer, Paul Cameron (George Brent) and Ruth. Her attention to a “furriner” helps none her attempts to establish a mountain medical clinic. Although Cameron proved at her trial the father actually died of heart failure, the jury, full of hate of the “meddlin’ furriner” and :stanch in belief that children should honor and obey their parents, finds her guilty.

Populace Is Aroused

A 25-year sentence arouses the populace, which easily is incited to lynching because the sentence is not In a dramatic ending Ruth is saved by the lawyer, a doctor (Guy Kibbee) and loyal women who masquerade as lynchers and whisk her away to a, waiting airplane. “Mountain Justice” paint§ a vivid picture of another slice of American life we like to overlook, but it's seriousness does not mar its entertainment value. It is forthright, always dramatic and well acted. Miss Hutchinson is deft in her sympathetic role, but Mr. Brent seems a bit bored with it all. Robert Barrat is the film's brightest star, and if you want to hiss the villain he creates, I, for one, ap-

Variety Acts Jolly

The Lyric stage bill presents tuneful and jolly variety acts, headlined by the California Collegians, the band you may have heard in “Top of the Town” or “Champagne Waltz.” They're good entertainers as well as good musicians, and their 20 or 30 minutes is sparkling enough. The band, incidentally, is the one

Less interesting is Francyne Faye's strip act. She received little if any applause yesterday afternoon. (By R. N)
