BIGGEST SUPPLY OF HOGS IN U.S.
MARKETED HERE
Heavy Receipts Drive All Prices Sharply Lower in Trade Today.
By Bureau of Agricultural Economics U. S. Department of Agriculture
Indiangpolis Union Stockyards had more hogs on sale today than any market in the country, but the liberal supply, expected to reach 10,000 head, spelled sharply lower prices. Demand was fairly broad from shippers. for weights below 235 pounds and these weights lost only 15 cents, but meidum weights and heavies were hammered sharply, declining 20 to 30 cents. Principal outlet for heavy butchers was mainly to local houses and these interests were very bearish.
Top dipped to $10,20 on choice 225 to 235-pound weights. The schedule of trading was expanded so that weights above 160 pounds were divided into 12 groups instead of nine as formerly. Sows declined 25 cents in sym-
Bulk moved at $9 to $9.60. Cattle Buying Urgent
There was urgent buying for all classes of killing cattle today and prices held fully steady at the week’s advance. Supplies consisted mostly of slaughter she stock, running heavily to cows. Odd lots of steers and yearlings cleared, at $9.50
included sales of heifers. Choice cows sold upward to $M Good ‘grade brought $7 to $8 and common and medium offerings turned at $5.75-$6.75. Cutter grades had a range of $4.25 to $5.50. Sales of medium grade sausage bulls were made at $6.75 downward. Cattle receipts were estimated 4t 600 head. A run of vealers expected to reach close to 1000 head, coupled with lower advices from nearby centers, put the market into buyers’ hands and values declined 50 cents. Good and choice vealers cashed from $10 to $10.50, medium mostly $8 to $9, medium to good kinds upward to $9.50. Heavy calves sold upward to $9.50 and above for choice lightweights, around 350-400 pounds. Lamb supplies of around 1000 head were expected. LIQUIDATION OF WHEAT IMPEDES NEW PRICE RALLY
Uruguay Reported Ready to Admit Grain Imports Without Duty.
By United Press CHICAGO, April 23. — Wheat prices became mixed on the Chicago Board of Trade today after the opening weakness. At the end of the first hour wheat was ls to % cent lower, Corn was 13 cent lower to 1; gent higher, and oats were off 1s to up 14 cent.
There was some small buyi ing on
‘| the opening decline and prices be-
gan a movement forward that erased portions of the early losses. Liquidation, however, continued in small volume and held back the rally. Several local operators were prominent on the buying side. There was a report from Washington that Uruguay planned to admit wheat imports without imposition of what was described as “extra duty.” . Corn rallied with May-and July having short gains. Most of the downturn in September also was erased. Deferred futures received support from local traders.
