VALLEE DENOUNCES. PUBLICITY “IDIOGY’
is Artist Stand Stands or Falls On Own Work.
By United Press BOSTON, April 22. — Crooner Vallee returned to New York
| today after topping his conviction
on an assault charge with a radio speech attacking the “idiocy” of publicity. “I believe that an artist stands or falis by his work,” Vallee said in a talk broadcast over a New England | network at his own expense. “Publicity is of little help to him in the long run . . . in the specific sense, publicity is the inane nonsense that a publicity agent is hired to think up and get into print. On the {| other hand, when I come to a city for an appearance, I have always felt that dignified announcements of one’s appearances were all right.”
Referring to his conviction on a charge of assaulting a photographer who snapped a picture of Rudy and Miss Evelyn Gresham of New York in a theater lobby, the crooner defended his actions as “solely” for Miss Gresham's sake. Municipal Judge Daniel J. Gillen filed - Rudy's case, but fined his | friend, Harry Paul of Boston, $50 | {on an assault charge.
