LYNCHING BILL SPONSORS PLAN SENATE FIGHT

Gavagan Measure Passes : House by Vote of 276-119.

Bu United Press WASHINGTON, April 16.—The| sharp sectional fight over the Gavagan Antilynching Bill today swung to the Senate where sponsors) of the first such legislation to pass the House in 15 years planned a campaign to force action this session. The measure—approved 276 to 119 bv the House yesterday—is expected to encounter more vigorous opposition in the Senate. Southern Democrats already are lining .up to denounce it as an invasion of state's rights. Senator Borah, veteran Idaho Republican, served notice that he is against the bill. Senate advocates doubted that the Judiciary Committee—now tied up President Roosevelt's Court program—could . consider the Gavagan bill until next month. They looked to Senator Wagner (D. N. Y.). a party figure and author of a companion proposal, to engineer it to early action. |

Jinx Pursues Bills On Lynching

Times Speeinl WASHINGTON, April 16.—An ancient jinx overhangs the current drive for a Federal antilynching law, The VanNuys-Wagner-Gavagan bill was passed by the House last night, 276-to 119, but if it ever becomes law it will be the first measure ever enacted after running the gauntlet of the House ‘discharge rule.” The rule permits a bill to be forced to a vote by a petition of 218 | members—a ‘bare majority of the House. Bills have passed the House | previously under this rule, but none has ever completed the full legislative journey, although the discharge method of prying legislation out of committee pigeonholes has been in the House rulebook for more |

Trick Is in Reading Dials

. . Almost anyone could land a plane in a dense fog if he could read the instruments correctly. But pilots say “that’s the trick.” The instrument panel shown above is that of the special Army amphibian now making tests of the Lorenz blind landing system at the Municipal Airport. The Lorenz instrument is shown at the extreme right. Pilots know it as the ‘glide path indicator.” .

Woman's Cry of ‘Snake’ Proves Just a Snake-in-the-Grass Joke

* URRY right out here—I'm surrounded by shakes and can't get out ~of my house.” This cry of a sober woman in distress swung police into doublequick action today, and they hot-footed it out to 49th St. and Hillside Ave. All appeared quiet when they arrived at the. designated house. And when they informed the occupant about the telephone call, she just laughed. It seemed to sort of upset the pclicemen—until she told her story. : “I don't know who called you, but ¢ ---- -—— — — — they must have been referring to FRATERNITY TO HONOR my son's pets,” said Mrs. L. Z. Taylor, 4901 Hillside Ave.
