NEW YORK, April 15.—Brokerage opinion ‘today: E. A. Pierce & Co.—We believe that on weakness leading motor shares should be regarded as a purchase and that long positions in them already established should be maintained. REDMOND & CO.—Believe that the averages will tend moderately downward at this time toward the lower limtis of the trading range established during the last two weeks. LAMBORN, HUTCHINGS & CO. —The best attitude the average trader can take is to confine commitments on a moderate trading basis to a comparatively few volatile favorites. FRAZIER JELKE & CO.—The outlook for financial markets has brightened somewhat as a result of cessation of foreign liquidation, easings of the tension in labor disputes and indications that quarterly earnings statements will show a continuation of the recovery in profits.

LIGHT SUPPLY OF LIVE STOCK RAISES PRICES

Hogs Gain 15 Cents and Touch Week’s Top; Cattle Stronger.

U. S. Bureau, Agric. Economics

An upward trend in hog prices to= day followed closely curtailed supe plies. - For the second consecutive day 11 markets had fewer hogs thang a week ago, while the local run fell below last week's for the third day in a row. Sellers were pricing supplies 25 cents higher, but did not hesitate. long in accepting a 15-cent upturn. The rise applied to all weights of barrows and gilts, as well as to packing sows. This advance placed values at the highest level of the week and the market at present is only 5 to 10 cents below last week's close. Choice 225 to 250-pound weights topped at $10.15. Sows moved within a spread of $9.15 to $9.65, with smooth light kinds as high as $9.75. > Receipts were estimated at 6000, compared with 8849 a week ago and

> 13833 a year ago.

Buyers Compete A supply factor also governed the trade in slaughter cattle. An estimated run of only 800 head made buyers compete actively for practie cally all classes. Cows were in es= pecially broad demand and respond ed to the extent of a strong to 25= cent higher market. Heifers were steady to strong. A range of $9 to $10.50 included most sales of steers, and heifers moved at .$8.50 to $9.75, odd head touching $10. Common and medium quality beef cows brought -$5.50 to $6.50, with cutter grades generally reflecting the strong to higher market at $4 to $5.25. Practical top on sausage bulls held at $6.50, with, beef bulls upward to $7. High vealer prices compared with nearby centers continued to meet with active shipper support early, chiefly as the result of light receipts. Prices were fully steady with Wednesday's but weakness. later pervaded the trade. Good and choice vealers bulked from $10.50 to $11, latter price paid sparingly late, Medium cashed largely from $8.50 to $9.50. A few heavy calves cleared from $6.50 to $8.50. Meager receipts of lambs consist ed almost entirely of shorn offerings, which found steady support, quality considered. Around two double decks of 89-pound clippers sold zt $10.85, with other classes limited to a few slaughter ewes at $5.50 and below.
