Gasoline Consumption for Year Sets New Mark, + Stoops Announces.

Increased automobile travel in In-

~ diana last year is reflected in the re-

cent report of increase gasoline consumption, according to Todd Stoops. Hoosier Motor Club secretary-man-ager. ~ During last year 559.650,000 galIons went into automobile tanks in the state, compared with 496,833,000 gallons the previous year. “In the entire country,” Mr, Stoops said, “motor vehicles used 19,500,000,000 gallons last year according to preliminary estimates. This was a gain of 9.2 per cent over

the 1935 consumption of 17,865,000,000 gallons. “For many states, 1936 set a new high record in the amount of gasoline used, reflecting increased registration of motor vehicles and greater extent of car use. Not only do more people own cars than for several years, but they are driving them more. “Increase in the amount of gasoline used brought about a substantial rise in gasoline tax collections. State governments collected approximately $678,000,000 from this source, a gain of 10 per cent over 1935 collections and a new all-time high. “Counting in Federal and local gas taxes, the total. amount of révenues extracted by means of the gas pump during 1936 was approximately $990,000,000 or nearly $30 for every vehicle registered in the entire nation.”
